Audi A4 2.5 TDI Sport ?
Anyone got any opinions on the quattro ?
I drove the 1.9 tdi avant quattro and thought it handled pretty damn well and had a fair bit of go in it..
Missus even managed to like it (she hates estates)
We are thinking of replacing our pug 306 hdi with it..

Another option is the A6 2.5 quattro, it got a 180bhp version of the V6 diesel which is nice and spec-for-spec it was the same price new as the A4. Think you can only get them used, however.

The 1.9 averaged 39mpg and the V6 35mpg. The V6 sounded nice but I have to say that the 1.9 performed better from low revs (not higher up). Both gripped superbly well (better than any other 4x4 car I've owned) and were ok on the track, but the V6 engine weight over the front wheels made it understeer more.
Or you could buy a much newer Octavia 4x4 estate, offset the extra fuel cost with the money saved and remap it safely to 220bhp. (Oh yes, that's what I did www.briskoda.net.

the new A4 has the 2.5 180 BHP engine...but forgot that the weight would possibly affect the handling.
It felt more confident chucking it about than my scoob did (the avant) and that got me thinking about getting one..
Going to look at the octavia as its a pretty good deal !
Cheers for the replies guys, food for thought while I sell the scoob

Hand on heart, the Octavia (220bhp) is more fun to drive that both my A4's and the extra body roll hasn't actually bothered me much - and I came straight from a Tek2'd Impreza Turbo.
If you are approaching it from a 'cost saving but still not bad to drive' perspective then you could do a lot worse. Compare the price of a 2001Y Octavia and A4 and you'll see what I mean. Still has an Audi engine, gearbox
Audi A3/TT haldex quatrro etc etc etc

I've got one
I've just changed my classic scoob for an A4 2.5 V6 TDI Quattro Sport, and yes its the 180 bhp and tiptronic.
To answer your question whats Quattro like then its no Subaru AWD. There's too much electronics going on and it does take some getting used to when the car ESP system brakes for you when you're used to sliding the car around a corner.
The A4 is completely different and I wouldn't ever compare it to a Scoob. In saying that, the ride and handling are excellent - its grips well, understeers less than my Scoob but maybe thats due to the slower speed I drive at now. As for overall speed, it still takes me 25 mins to get to work but you'll have to be more selective on how many cars you can overtake in one go.
As for the engine, its all rubbish that the 1.9 is better. The new 2.5 TDi already complies with the EU4 legislation and for a mere £300 over 210bhp can be achieved with just a remap. Oh, that all comes with over 410Nm of torque. The sound of the engine is quite nice too, kinda growls, but doesn't wake the neighbours up in the morning.

Was thinking of changing to an A4 quattro after the scoob, but then thought i would miss the scoob too much (handling and that umph factor), then my scoob got knicked last night and i don't want another because of this. But my only concern is that the A4 (or A6) would be just a nickable, there were sh*t loads of audis in the recovery yard and only 1 scoob (mine!!)

I have a 2003 Audi A4 Quattro tdi sport with a full Audi bodykit !
The 130pd engine rocks ! Mine now has 205bhp ! Its a very aggressive map though with plenty of smoke. In 30k its had a new clutch and was diagnosed needing a new turbo two days ago so a visit to JabbaSport is really needed before the warranty runs out !! As the engine is lighter than the outdated 2.5 it does handle better. Feels a better handling car to my old Scoob, as for the build quality !!!!
Totally recommend the car although they tend to hold their money well and are quite expensive compared to other marques.

Good old Jabbasport Anything VAG and you get top notch expertise, remapping and customer service without the cost and we-know-best attitude of some other tuners I could mention.

Have to admit its the first car I have driven in a long time that I wanted to take home as soon as I drove it...started looking at prices now and going to advertise the scoob next month as weather gets better..
I think the service interval is up to 19k now, which again based on miles we do in Pug is brill
I like the looks too - shame scoob has to go but 6 months of furious fun must make way for sensible fun

Halo
Are you sure that its not up to 30k? When I had my (new) V6 from 2000 - 2002 that would go up to 22k and was one of the earliest A4 diesels on variable servicing. I'm sure that the dealer said 30k was allowable on the 1.9

My current map was done by Simple Performance Solutions by the last owner (also formerly from this board !!). After having 2 family PD cars tuned at JabbaSport including my fathers A6 that they got such good figures they had to roll back the torque as it wouldnt have been healthy for the clutch ! Straight after my house sale my A4 will be off to Jabba for a safe map with no smoke, a map that doesnt put the car in safety mode when you go over 120mph as its overfuelling !!
Whatever PD engined car you buy make sure you only go to Jabbasport, best £425 you can spend. On the Seat site there is a voucher for 5% off as well !

This thread just got me thinking.
If the 2.5 engine is so poor as some people say, why is it 1.5 secs quicker 0 - 62 than the 130bhp engine.
The Audi 0 - 100km/h figures, 130bhp is 9.9s, the 180bhp is 8.4s
Kerb weight is not much different 130 bhp is 1945kg vs 2145kg. (Probs due to the fact the 2.5 is 4-wheel drive??)

But when looking 2nd hand the 2.5 180 bhp is around the same price and I fancy the extra torque as standard - plus its not such a drop from the scoob...
Going to mull it over a bit and then suss a test drive of the 2.5

The 1.9 quattro is even slower at 10.1s to 62mph. Also weighs 2065kg .
So IMHO the 2.5 180 bhp quattro is the better version of the diesel quattro's, given its nearly 2 secs quicker of the mark and almost weighs the same.

For the record, I had my chipped A4 2.5 TDi Quattro properly timed (ie no error) on standing standards when I had it - 7.3 seconds was repeatable. It averaged 35.5mpg over 45,000m.
I would guesstimate my 1.9 Quattro (also chipped) at upper 8's. 39mpg overall
