It's a BMW for the masses..built to a price. BMW traditionally hasn't competed with Ford and Vauxhall for family cars...this one is built expressly to compete in this market.
THe badge will appeal to many people..the driving dynamics won't matter much..though BMW will market it agressively as the only RWD/front engined car in the class.

Hmm I'm not so sure its a direct competitor to Ford & Vauxhalls small hatchbacks, I don't think BMW will be able to sell them cheap enough and they would run the risk of de-valuing the brand. It looks more like a competitor for the Audi A3, Merc A140, Alfa 147 and high-specced Golfs, IMO. I'm pretty sure it'll sell loads on the strength of the brand alone though, despite Chris Bangle's questionable styling.

MJW got it right " It looks more like a competitor for the Audi A3, Merc A140, Alfa 147 and high-specced Golfs,"
The new one series is a great looking car and drives extremely well - it has a lot of room both in the front and rear, the seats fold down to provide a very large space which dwindles our poor scooby boot space, the equipment and features offered are right up there with the top models, and the development behind the car and the materials used should indicate a much higher price than it is offered for. The styling is very nice indeed, and no amount of pictures do it justice... Everything fits, (perhaps the sides could have done without the Bangle treatment though), but otherwise it looks great at any angle. There is also a lot of attention to detail gone into this car.. The diesel is also a very big surprise for those untrained...
When you get the chance, take one out for a run,- and then take the competitors cars out - you will step out of them shaking your head... I know I did.

And I thought the Bug-Eye was fugly!
Seriously bad news for other road users... now the A3/Golf brigade can afford to upgrade to the outside lane hogging class
