Approx weight of a VW mk1 Golf gti?
#7
Mozza, its heavy if you try and lift it, but go and drive one and see how heavy it feels, I had a MK1 1600 GTI aged 18 and it was wonderful, you cant compare it to modern mega horsepower stuff but even stuff like CTR's has to work very hard against a well prepared Golf.

They tended to be heavier than the french built cars of the same era, mainly because they were built from thicker (hence heavier) gauge steel.
It is a comparatively simple job to lighten them though, just taking the front wings of & removing the underseal from them & the inner wings will lose you about 30kg

Its simple, remove what you dont need and give it more power, cant compare it to an R5 turbo which was a good car also but had the structural integrity of a tissue box.
I put my Golf up a 10 inch high kerb, it ripped the spoiler off but no other damage, tracking was still spot on, had an R5 1.7 GTX which was no way as robust, was pretty quick though.

Most manufacturers (especially the German ones) quoted weights are DRY weights, i.e: without fluids. Once you take into account 10L of coolant at 1kg/L, 6.5-7L of engine/'box oils at 0.95kg/L & say, 1/2 50L tank of fuel at 0.87kg/L it soon adds up
BTW the 840kg weight quoted in evo is actually that for an original 4 speed LHD example. 5th gear added another 2kg, RHD brake linkages & servo added another 5+kg, and most UK cars had sunroofs as std wich added another 25kg right where you don't want it!
840+10+6.65+22+2+5+25 = 910.65kg
Oh yeah, don't forget the other 200+kg of MDF & subs in the boot in an effort to make it handle more like a porch
