Question Help! How do I change Prelude Gearbox Oil?

I Have 5th Gen Prelude. It is the Auto Sequencial **** box.
I need to change Gearbox oil and Filter. Im assuming there is a gearbox oil filter that is.

Is this a simple job that I could do on Sat afternoon with a set of ramps and very limited tool kit?

Is the drain plug and filter easy to get at and where are the located?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

D.

If it's simialr to the older ones have a look here

Honda publish the proper workshop manuals online here for the older models.

I assume most of the Honda's are the same, in which case, this may help: Picture guide for a CRX owner

You can't change the filter on the auto box, but to drop the fluid the drain plug is found at the bottom outer of the 'box, quite central (if that makes any sense?).
To refill, (replace drain plug )add 3 litres of ATF Dexron through a funnel into the dipstick hole (should be at the front of the 'box, quite low down), start engine, check fluid and slowly add 1/4 litre at a time until it reaches just above bottom mark on dipstick. Run car up through all gears and re-check. Job done

Cheers for that.

I dont see any mention of any gearbox oil filter.
Is there no oil filter on the automatic gearbox?

Ah ok

So is there a filter inside the auto gearbox somewhere.
The problem I have is that the oil pressure is low when the gearbox is stone cold and it has problems changing up to second gear but only when cold.

So after 5 mins its ok. I suspect the filter if there is one inside is blocked and when the oil is cold then the pressure is low. Fluid level is ok.

Any ideas on how to fix this with out taking gearbox out?

Has it always displayed the late shift characteristic, or is it a problem which is getting worse? The filter can't be accessed without stripping the 'box down. Usually if a filter is blocked it would get worse as it gets warm, as when its been stood all the debris settles in the bottom of the gearbox, as it warms up the debris circulates and blocks the filter. Wherabouts are you based??

It has been doing it for last 10K miles, seems to be getting a little worse.
But it only does it from stone cold. pulls away in first ok then at point of change to 2nd the revs rise and no gear is selected then the gear is engaged late with a joint through the transmision. If you lift of the throttle at the point of change to 2nd and give it a sec then it changes ok. But as I said earlier it only happens for about 5 to 10 mins then it seems to work normally.

Im in south west near Swindon.

It might be programmed to hold first longer when cold to speed up the engine warming, but I can't be sure on that one. If its been like it for 10,000 miles though I would suspect so.

ATF Dexron
make sure it's what is recommended in the manual, honda are quite specfic to what type of ATF to use in some of their boxes.

But dexron III (as in 3) should cover it, but check to make sure

edit: there will probably be a strainer on the oil pickup...complete strip down to clean. Should be a magnet on the drain plug that picks up some of the crap (not much use if it has alloy internals though )

You will find a magnet on the drain plug, but there is no sump I'm afraid

Honda's diagnosis is that a bearing has broke up in gearbox cause they said there was metalic deposits in the gearbox oil. This was then bloking the filter in the box and causing low pressure when cold cause the oil was thicker then.

When in Neutral or Park you can hear slight rattley noise from gearbox which disappears completely when drive is engaged.

They said it needed new auto box and torque converter at a cost of nearly £2500 parts and labour.

What do you you think it would cost to fix?

Mileage is 66K

An exchange box should be about a grand including torque convertor from a specialist. I know a good one but in South Yorkshire I'm afraid.
