Question Vauxhall 1.7TD Turbo Problem

It's my wifes company car. Drove it at the weekend and it feels like someone has stolen the turbo......no turbo kick and it's as slow as an old diesel Transit van!!
Local garage has an astra van of the same age and they're having to replace the turbo as it's knackered.

How can I tell if it's the turbo that's gone?, any good Vauxhall or Turbo diesel forums?

Anyone had this problem?

Kevin

How old is the car? Is it chucking out lost of blue smoke, or black sooty smoke? If not, then the turbo might be OK.

In VAG diesels, the MAF (mass airflow sensor) is a common weak spot. When it fails, it gives the symptoms you describe: no power. This could be worth checking

Another thing to check is the integrity of the turbo and intercooler hoses (if it has an IC).

Hope this helps ...

What age is the car? If it has the Isuzu indirect injection engine in it, they commonly get their catalysts (yes they have them) gummed up with carbon if the car hasn't been driven 'vigorously' enough for a while. A good boot on the motorway can often sort this (you can tell it's working by the soot out the back!)

Option 2 is obviously gummed up injectors - try a fivers worth of proper injector cleaner and fuel treatment from Halfords.

Option 3 is also quite common on older Astra diesels - the exhaust decays on the inside (from condensation if it's mostly been used for short trips) and the rust collapses and clogs it up. New exhaust for that section is the answer and can be checked for by taking off the manifold and running the engine (loud, but works!)

Tell us how you get on!

Also, if its a recent Astra Tdi with the 16valve diesel engine....did it have a cambelt break recently?

Just that there is an issue with these at the moment where if it does break, the broken bits normally get repaired. But the pulleys on the camshafts slip during failure. Basically this wrecks the camshaft as it cannot be timed correctly and when its put back together it may run, but it'll be completly gutless as the cam timing is incorrect (something to look out for when buying these from auctions).
