New BMW 535d - 272 bhp and, 560 Nm (413 lb ft) torque at 2,000 rpm
0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and a limited 155mph.
I'm going to have to change my blinkered opinion on oil burners. One day. Soon.

Well, you only have to change your mind on the 535d of course 
This doesn't mean that all of the sudden, all previous diesels suddenly become performance cars, which no doubt some people will start prophesizing.

It would be interesting to see the road tests and feedback if someone built a proper lightweight sports car with a diesel lump, like a Caterfield or Lotus Elise with one of the new VAG 16-valve aluminium PD motors.
