Question

I have had a 2001 WRX for 12 months and am thinking of changing it for something else. I have the chance to buy an ex-company BMW 840Ci. It's a 1998 model with 90K miles. Has anyone owned one? How will it compare to my 2001 WRX in terms of performance and running costs? I cover 10-12K miles per year.

I look forward to some helpful comments.

Paul

I kinda looked into these aswell. Servicing isn't too disimilar to a 7-series, but watchout for exhausts ! VEEEERY expensive.

All the best

Cheap to buy now, but parts are quite ridiculous. I idly considered one, then remembered that the new car is about 70k plus, so has parts priced commensurately

Rich mans probe everyone will shout - but hey I'd have one any day - great car for the money.

I looked at getting an 850 a couple of years ago - deffo need a decent warranty on it.. but it's a V12

Imaginge one in black, just lowered enough to be aggressive

Thanks for the feedback. Here's my thoughts so far:

Positive
- cheap to buy
- insurance similar to WRX
- build quality
- comfort/motorway cruising
- limited depreciation over 12 months (assuming I can buy at a good price)

Negative
- high servicing
- high running costs
- limited fun factor compared to WRX

Perhaps I should stick with the scooby until I can afford to buy a Porsche 993?

More comments please!

Paul

I tested an 850 prior to buying the M3 (along with testing 328s and a few 5's!!)-I'd chop the M in for an 8 in an instant but they are expensive to own and run and are a different style and type of drive. They arent designed for edge-of-the-seat insane acceleration, more straight line autobahn storming...BUT...they'll still skim up to 60 in approx 7 secs -thats 2 tons of motor that looks the mutts!
