I bought a 316 compact recently from a BMW dealership but have still not had an acceptable job done on a panel match. They have painted it twice now and its still below par.
The problem is each time you repaint it it creates new problems and i'm not sure they can now ever resolve it.
My only choice may be to return the car.
Anyone successfully done this(for any reason that is)?

Yes, we bought a brand new Seat Leon 2 years ago. The passenger door was a different shade of blue to the rest of the car, and masking tape was still stuck to the door! They first offered to respray the door and then replace the door.
Trading standards said it was acceptable for them to supply me with a resprayed car as long as it was 'as good as new' and as long as they could tell me why the car door needed respraying. The dealer denied any knowledge of the respray, therefore didn't know the circumstances that led to the respray so replaced the car at my request. After all the door that was a different colour may well be the only original part for all they knew!
No big fight, they just ordered me a new one and allowed me to use the existing one in the meantime.

Dunno, about returning a car...but getting a "refundable" deposit off them is a nightmare.
We put a refundable deposit down on a BMW 330cs pending independant inspection. It was found the bodywork was like a patchwork quilt, and very poor quality repairs and the car wasn't worth the asking price.
Put it this way, 2 months later I think we have a cheque in the post!
My uncle bought a New Clio 172 which was riddled with faults, after many visits to the garage he wanted a refund. But it was found that the car was a parallel import, so as far a Renault UK were concerned - it wasn't their problem

Yes - I've successfully returned a new car.
Engine oil leak.
Needed me to
1) leave the car at their disposal
2) Formally reject the car in writing and explain reasons
3) Involved trading standards
4) Involved my solicitor (purely for verbal advice)
Took about 3 days for a decision & endless phone calls - and the car was with me within 2 weeks. Your issue will likely be with the garage rather than BMW UK.
No doubt that leaving the car and refusing to take it back is the key. In your position give them one more chance - if the match isnt good enough reject the car verbally and put it in writing and FAX it the same day.
Good luck,
Gastro
