BMW extended warranty
#1
Mate of mine has been offered to extended his warranty beyond 3 years @ £560 per annum.
Is it worthwhile?

I extended my warranty with a 328 and nothing ever went wrong.... so I decided not to do it with the M3..... the VANOS went!
The question is, do you feel lucky? Well, do you?
Joking aside, extended warranty will improve the value of the car in the future although whether or not it will be more than is paid for the warranty is debatable. Warranty is currently coveted in 2nd hand BMW's because once it lapses it cannot be renewed. It is worth noting however that BMW are considering letting people recommence warranty under certain circumstances, so the perceived value of extended warranty mey be diluted in the future.

I extended it on my 328 as the last owner had done so from new and said it was well worth it,i only had to make 2 claims which went through quickly and with no question the lady i got the car from said they even came out to them stuck at the airport with a flat batt and fitted a new one

Rigbsy,
Had no real issues with the M5. The Vanos unit was a little bit rattly on startup. It takes a couple of seconds for oil to reach the top end of the unit. However, I didn't like it and the dealer replaced the unit and installed the update from the post 2001 E39.
I had the TV unit replaced too. Apart from that, nothing ever went wrong. The E39 is fantastic and easily the best car I've had the pleasure of owning. A mate bought if from me and it's been used in anger on the Cannonball run and around the Ring. It's never needed more than the usual servicing and a clutch!
If you can get a good one, especially a 2001 on car, there really is nothing better for the money.

I was advised to do it when buying my M3 Evo years ago.
I ran it for about 3 months, put it in for a routine service and was told the VANOS was causing a leakage in the engine.
Without the warranty it would've cost me £2,500 to fix apparently.

Added bonus is if anything does go wrong the recovery service is excellent and they'll deliver a loan car to you and pick it up from you as well.
On my M5 the start motor went. They came to the house and whilst he was there I asked him to check the clutch as I thought it was slipping. It went in for repair and they fitted a new starter motor and new clutch for £0, plus they delivered it back to me and picked the loan 318 saloon up!
Well worth it and I personally would not touch a second-hand BM without one.

Supposed to be one of the best warrenties going.
Having said that my bro had a 320 for 10 years, only ever needed pads/discs and tyres.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING EVER WENT WRONG during that time.
