Hi Everybody
I am interested in buying a 1998 200sx 2.0 touring and I wondered if anyone here had/does own one.
I would be greatful for any info about these cars, good or bad.
What are the cars like to live with? mpg servicing costs etc
Are they reliable?
Are high mileage cars to be avoided? the one that i hope to see has 109000!
I have been to the nissan websites. But what I was hoping for here was personal opinions of the cars.
One last thing, anything to particulary look out for in addition to normal car checks?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers
Brett

i had a 99, fairly quick, comfy, good spec, look good in a subtle way....and now very cheap.
would i buy one? no....because for everyone who says "ohhh, rear wheel drive fun, drift this and slide that" there will be someone else who has put theirs in a ditch (or into a 4X4 in my case)
rearwheel drive with no plan b is for a track or 1975.

Thanks Tiggs.
Would you happen to know the specification difference between the S14 and the S14a?
I appreciate the comments about the handling issue.
Cheers

Have a good look at service history as it should have an oil change every 3k miles.
but with 100k you would be lucky.
Listen 2 the engine alote looking for knocks and rattles or pulsing.
Make shure when pulling away it doesnt jump out of gear.
check for blue smoke.
check 4 a rattley sound from near the turbo(as you look into the engine bay its on the right).
All s14s have a rattley sound when pulling away 1st or 2nd time.(its the vvt).
When you get it change the oil every 2k with thicker oil.
Check for bulges in tyres and bye some good rubber asap.(£55 a tyre for toyo proxis).
S14a is the way to go but avoid cloth trim.
0.60 6.5 150mph qtr mile 15sec standard!!!
If you do a major service get a induction kit and plugs£200(hks)and if you need a new zorst by a bren 1 at Apex performance£300 stainless.

A friend of mine had an S14a, but soon sold it after a patch of bad weather and did a 360 in the middle of a duel carriageway. Luckily for him it was 5am!!!

Thanks again all.
As luck would have it one of my old issues of Jap. Perf. has an article on buying a 200sx (which ive just found now!)
Will certainly bear the handling issue in mind. thanks for the warnings.
just for info purposes. Taken from japanese Performance magazine.
S14a (introduced Oct 1996) differs from the S14 in that it has a restyled front end and and different light bar at the rear and the touring spec included: side skirts, leather, 10 disc CD, headlamp wahsers, drivers lumbar support and passenger airbag.
Hopefully I will get a chance to have a look at a few this weekend.
Thanks again.
One more thing...def....the plugs which you refer to. Are they the HKS Iridium spark plugs. What does it mean exactly about them running colder?

The touring also has air-con.
colder plugs should be used when upping the boost.
You can by a bren device for £90 but you should also get a boost gauge.
As for the handling!!!!!
It it light and rear wheel drive so should be respected in the wet or snow.
But overall in the d1 drift comp they came 1st,3rd,4th,5th and are used for drifting around the world because of there near perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
As for speed Jun hold the record for rwd qtr mile in a stock chassis and engined vehicle with a 8.89second run in there hyper lemon 800bhp s14.Thats quicker than any uk scooby or skyline!!!!.
Have you checked www.sxoc.com????
