yes, I have one for sale at the moment - '99 S for £7900 ono http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=285918

Solid cars. Very reliable... the 1.8T engine is very tunable and greatly improves the drivability of the car. You'll be looking at 210lb/ft as a very minimum, and this makes overtaking etc a breeze.

The 1.8T has the VW sports suspension which sits slightly lower than the other GTIs and is a wee bit firmer.

Anything else you want to know?

Recaro seats
suspension abit too soft tho and you may find yourself changing down a gear to get it to shift.

Went in a 52 reg one today belonging to a guy from work, he got a Miltek (SP ?) exhaust on it and boost increased slightly on it, was quite impressed with it. Didnt like the seats or brakes, serious lack of support / braking power in them.
There are better cars out there to be honest, byt if after a quickish well specced GTI then OK.

Very reliable and very discreet. Great build quality, a nice all round car, although steering is too light.
Loved mine, never worried where I parked it and was very dependable.

....not if it has been chipped! It'll pull from about 2700RPM

Didnt like the seats....... serious lack of support
The early cars like mine came with Recaro's as standard - they are awesome! later cars came with VW Sport seats that are nowhere near as bolstered

nice cars but 7.3 now way, My old 8 valve MK2 was as quick from a standstill with only minor mods. My T5 was booked at 7.0 and the Golf was nowhere near that thing.

We have a fleet of Golfs at work, a mixture of 130 TDI and 150 GTI's. I reckon the combined mileage is more than 500,000 miles and the only problem I can recall is a faulty turbo on one of the diesels, which was repaired under warranty. Otherwise they have been faultless

Basically the GTI's are very reliable and good mixture of performance, comfort and build quality. The only downside is they are not involving to drive. Vague steering, not much feedback through the chasis, over servo'd brakes etc. The Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs much better in that respect.

Easy to tune the 1.8T engine, but as standard I don't reckon mine would get to 60 in any less than 8 seconds.

There's a nice one for sale here:

Cheers

Phil.

I had 2 over a period of 3 years. Didn't have much luck reliability wise though.

The car itself feels weel built and pretty quick, but doesn't like being rushed at all. The chassis feels old and unrefined compared with current cars. Crashes about a bit and has no excitement.

They do lots of things very well, great recaro seats, good stereo, great on the m-way and saw 140mph on the speedo in germany. Certainly sub 8 secs to 60 in the real world. 40mpg possible on motorway trips too.

30k of motoring cost me 1 £70 service and a set of 4 tyres. The other 2 services were free from the dealer for being a waste of space.

I wouldn't buy another VW. I sold my last one and now drive a MINI cooper S, and wouldn't swap back.
