The first letter(s) denote the model rang of the vehicle...egS500 is an S class....the other numbers denote the engine size.....so the S500 will have a 5.0L engine, E320 will have a 3.2 engine etc.....

The higher the letter the bigger the car.(Except "G")
Whith the numbers should be right, but it isn´t anymore..
example the 200K only have 1,8L Kompressor
The 200CDI is a 2,2L CDI
The 240 has a 2,6L
The 350 has a 3,7L
and the 600 is a 5,5L
But the rest tells the truth!

So why can you get a C180 with a 2.0 litre engine?
Looking at C200/220/240 etc, hatch or coupe but cant make head or tail of these numbers and letters, Mercedes site is even more confusing!
How on earth do you search for the model you want? It doesnt include the recently deleted models for instance

The numbers have stopped making sense - just like a BMW 318 or 323 does not have a 1.8 or 2.3 engine. They are purely marketing numbers lower down the range.
How about the C class sport Coupe C180k, C200k, C230k - all same cc, different tune/ECU.

Well either your mates C230K is not new, or he's got it wrong. Flat 4x4 is correct the Merc 4-cyl petrol engines in the C-class are all 1.8 supercharged engines, of varying power output, but basically the same engine.
Saab have done a similar thing with the 9-3, this time they use a 2.0 engine with either 150, 175 or 210hp depending on its tune. This engine is also being used in the Vectra/Signum by Vauxhall/Opel.

It WAS a 2,3cc, the newer ones only have 1,8cc. So it can be that there is a 2,3 K. But they are now not available anymore.
Have a look on this:
