Ok - a question...
I'm considering changing my car - what would you guys consider to be the best new car on the market for £20k? Assume my criteria is the best real-world mix of
- Driver appeal
- Comfort
- Reasonable running costs
- Looks
- Reliability
- Toys
Just interested to hear what you think. And also, if you had £20k to spend on a car what would you buy?

I'd find an extra grand and buy a new Clio V6 255...well thats what I'm doing anyway. You might get a second hand R32 Golf for that money, I haven't checked Autotrader though!

If you are willing to go 2nd hand.....how about an M5...you can get them now for around the 20k mark, and they are the mutts nutts in almost every department, although the looks may be too subtle for some.....

Willing to go second hand, as long as the costs aren't too high (M5 likely to be a lot). So probably not more than a year or two old.
The main one I've been thinking about so far is a Ford Mondeo ST220 - lovely car and you get a LOT for your money.

Mondeo Ghia X TDCI £20k ish car
16 months and 28k latter only just got 9k
Mondeo not a wise choice unless you like losing money looking at losing about 7k in 1st year on a ST220.
If you don't want a scooby then look at second hand Passat 4motion?, Audi A4? somthing that will hold a bit of its money after a couple of years
Save a bit of money and spec it up with extra toys, DVD, Sat Nav ect

YA DON'T WANT A NEW CAR! Theres a mk1 ford escort RS1800 for sale in classic car weekly. It has immense driving appeal with just over 150bhp, theres a lack of comfort but you can live with it. It does 55MPG, looks like a PROPER CAR, and is the ultimate toy. youres for £20000.

I'm in the same situation with a need to change from my MY99 - need a practical hatch / touring / estate or similar due to family addition + more travel to the continent.
A year old car makes sense, but I have been looking at everything from a PD 130 MK4 Golf to a 330D touring to a 2.7T Audi A6 Avant.
I have been seriously thinking about the ST220 hatchback as well. The only things that put me off are resale and quite low mpg. However, there are a company that I have used before that are offering the new updated ST220 on the road for less than £17.5k. This is a UK car sourced from a Ford dealer. Not bad at all. Espcecially since it has all the toys and the cheapest second hand example I have seen is just less than £16k. You do not see many of these on the road, so this could be a factor in holding the prices up.
Good luck with the search

Apparently the ST220s are holding their value a bit better than standard Mondeos. But the depreciation does worry me a bit, so I'm looking at the alternatives.
Already decided against a classic, and if I was going for something old, it'd be a Ford Sierra Cosworth 3dr on a D plate.

I know that you daft bu**er, I was just trying to wind you up
Anything you get after the RS is gonna dissapoint in one way or another, unless it has 300Hp minimum, how about a 2nd hand skyline or supra.

what about a P1? Will be second hand, but get one with warranty left, either from remainder of 3 year, or an extended 2 year one that goes on top of original 3 years. Not many toys to play with, but u can add on with a few k left over on your budget to get some.
Expect to pay around 18-20k for a good P1. You also wont have to stump up the original hefty depreciation that seems to be the bane of all new cars.

- BMW 3 series with the Sport Pack (whatever the largest engine you can get for £20k)
- Alfa 156 V6 Veloce Wagon
Classic:

- Audi Quattro 20v
Running Costs No Object
- BMW M5 (mid 1990's shape 3.8lt)
- Merc E55 AMG/C43 AMG
- Porsche 911 - 964 shape

If it was my money for an everyday car, I'd go for an S2000 (but I don't need rear seats).
