my missus has a 1.4 CL on an "M" I think.
good solid car,and relativeley reliable. My GF doesent think so though, she was trying to talk hersef into selling it the other week and as ammo she stated it had broken doen 3 times last year, these were ( woman alert ! )
Knackered battery - wear and tear IMO, batteries dont last forever.
Broken distributor - fair play, but this has been the only mayor fault since has owned it.
And the one that made me chuckle - a puncture
Like I say I like golfs, but hers feels underpowred ( she never goes over 3000 rpm anyway, and there is no power steering - mega heavy to drive at slow speed.
other than that wev'e had no problems.

Hi,
I had a '97 Mk3 GTi 16v and other than the car I have now it was the best car i've ever owned by far.
Had it for ~2.5 yrs nothing ever went wrong with it at all, infact all it cost me during my ownership was 4 tyres LOL.

My Fiancee has just bought one and it's such a nice car. Hers has covered 102,000 miles and looks & drives like a new car I can't comment on the power of the smaller engined ones though Golfs are great cars
Paul
p.s she had a mark 2 gti that got written off just before Christmas and got out of it without a mark on her Even the old one stood up well in a crash.

I had a 98 mk3 gti and it was a complete pile of poo, i owned a mk2 prior to this and that was one of the best cars i've ever owned but the mk3 was a nightmare, underpowered didnt deserve a gti badge, and was riddled with problems from day 1 but maybe i had a bag egg, although i believe that all golfs are **** since the mk2 apart from the r32.
