Question

Ive got a pug 405 and im going to put 1.9 GTI alloys on.
I was wondering, can i fit 205/55/15 tyres onto the alloys and will they fit on the car in the arches?
or do i need to stick with 185 or 195s?

Thanks very much

Tony

185 55 15 and 195 50 15 really the 2 choices for the 1.9 alloys mate, I'd go with the 195's - plus they are only about 30-40 quid each for Toyo/Eagle!

You'll need to use 195/55 R 15 or 205/50 R15 to keep the correct rolling radius. In which case the tyres won't be cheap as they are not a common size. I know this from running a Xantia with 195/55 tyres.

As for tyres, you'll struggle to get any decent sports rubber, plus being a 405 its not really going to make any use of them. The best I found to suit the Xantia (similar size and weight to t a 405) are Goodyear Eagle Ventura's, but I know these are in limited supply now. I'd recommend you try Vredestein Sportrac 2 if you can't find the Goodyears.

I'd go with 195 50 15 (cheap too) and make do with the small amount the speedo will be out. As I said - 30-40 quid for Eagle F1 or Toyo T1S.

Me too, 195, 50 15's are spot on for those wheels, that will be the correct rolling radius and as scoobyjawa says, Proxies are £33 each and F1's similar

Trust me on this the correct rolling radius for upgrading from 185/65 R14 to a 15-inch wheel is 195/55 R15 or 205/50 R15.

The 195/50 R15 tyre is the correct upgrade from a 185/60 R14 which the 205 and 309 had fitted. The 405 has a higher profile tyre and therefore needs a different size.

You could fit the smaller 195/50 tyres, but they will affect the ride, speedo and fuel consumption. The rolling radius is worng, and you'll end up using more fuel, and constantly having to guess what speed you are doing, as you won't have just the speedo inaccuracy to allow for, but the wrong tyres to, not much fun when your passing gatso's. The one advantage to this would be the price of the tyres.

Me personally I'd go for the correct size I listed above, its a small price to pay. Plus they'll fill the arches better on your car, the 195/50's will look a bit lost in the 405 arches.

If you want to check this out for yourself have a play with this handy tool http://www.polo-gt.co.uk/mechanical/tyrecalc.html

TBH I can't see the point myself. The T1-S are 15 per tyre cheaper for 195 50 15 which works out at 60 quid each time you need a new set. Its -3.37% compared to the standard wheels and 205 is -1.69% so both are going to read wrongly anyway. And besides when you are actually doing 70 on your speedo both will be doing less in actual speed so speed cameras etc are no issue.

I don't really think it matters which you go for either 195 50 15 or 195 55 15 or even 185 55 15 (though not as cheap as 195 50 15), I'd ultimately say its personal choice. At a saving of 60 a set, I know which I'd pick!

Besides, same happens on loads of cars, how many people change wheels (classic scoob for eg) and use 215 40 17 instead of 205 45 17 due to better range of tyres and prices. But again, neither of those sizes match the original 205 50 16 they were configured for........

Horses for courses IMHO, me? I'd rather save the cash!

205/50 R15 are silly prices. £150 each for P6000's. Standard size on Toyota Celica 6th gens and not much else. Nightmare. Otherwise Michelins are £180 + VAT each corner for that size.

er, the original spec for the 15" 205 GTi speedlines was 185/55/15. Most of the 205 boys use 195/50/15 which provides nearly the same rolling radius and is a lot cheaper, plus it provides better protection for the wheel rims when you're parking. Fitting 205-width tyres on tehse wheels is pushing things a bit far and I wopuln't entertain it for a minute. As for "decent sport rubber" Toyo T-1Ss and Goodyear Eagle F-1s aren't good enough for you? lol.

thanks very much to everyone that replied, i hope i didnt cause too many probs.

As recommended ill go for the 195/50/15 choice, as checking the prices, there is so much differnce, dont know why though.
As for the choice, ill prob go for the Proxes as heard good reports on these.

Again, thanks very much to all

I had a set of Proxes on my one-nine 205, they lasted two track days and a year's driving, were superb in the wet and would slide quite nicely (for a 205 ayway)
