Question

Quite fancy getting one as a tow car/practical estate for lugging, anyone had one - looking at 525i, 525tds or 530/540 V8? If it's any good I might sell the scoob and stick the money in the bank....

What are they like in terms of reliability?

hi
my wifes had one for about 2 months now, its a 525 se, oxford green with air con, bought it with nearly a full mot, 9 months tax and a sony md player for £2800 with 89k on the clock, so far no probs, averages 26 mpg around town, had 32 on a run, easy to service, bought the reset tool and do it myself, will send you a pic
all the best

I've got a 1996 540iT V8 and it is by far the best car I have owned.

If you get a well maintained one with a full history then you should have no real problems.

The handling and performance is very good on all models.

Most 540's have M tech suspension, and M5 spec brakes with vented discs all round.

The interior is very practical, and still looks quite modern.
Go for it

thanks guys - I found a great buying guide on totalbmw mag. The 525tds seems to be quite expensive (and rare) over and above the cost of the 525 or even 530/540i - they are as cheap as chips and quite a few with FSH!

Few more pictures now I'm home

They really are a good car. I paid £5500 for mine best part of two years ago. It has loads of sertvice history and cost the original owner £41,500 in 1996. It now has 129,000 miles on it and doesn't miss a beat.

As for performance:
155 mph electronically limited top speed.
0 - 60 6.6 seconds (automatic)

Just don't expect to better 21 mpg on a regular basis unless all your travelling is on a motorway
