Question

Thinking of getting a cheap runaround for, say £2k-ish

Needs to be an estate and cheap to run, so on the list is

Pug 405/406
Citroen Xantia
Vauxhall Astra/Vectra
Ford Escort/Mondeo
Honda Accord Aerodeck (petrol)
BMW 3/5 series touring (petrol)

All these would be obviously high milage so which ones are bullet-proof mechanically and reliable/cheap to run?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Justin

Peugeot would be my choice, or you could try to find a nice Merc E-class/Vauxhall Omega.

Peugeot would be on the top of the list, unless you could find a clean W124 Merc with FSH. Granted it'll have mega mileage, but it'll last. However, the Pug is most likely to be a better and more easily found prospect though.

Put the Fords to the bottom of the pile.

The TD in the older models is sh1te and tractor-like. A very poor, unrefined engine.

Pug. Get a tidy 405 and pocket the change. £2k wouldn't buy much of a 406.

Had them all, so I'd pick the Xantia ,dont be put off by tales of expensive suspension parts etc ,there are independant specialist that are cheap IF you need them.

Thumbs up

I havea Xsara the same as above in Estate form. Not for sale though.I wouldnt be without it.I bought mine over in 2001 with 120k miles.Paid 3000for it(3 year old car)with fsh.Great second car to my Evo.They are reliable, comfortable very economical and,and highly specced. When I bought mine it was absolutely as new-even with the miles. They have a big load area, standard suspension and come with a useful roof rack i.e.racks go across roof rather than down each side.Only problems was with immobiliser(which I disconnected-who's going to steal it!) and door handles which stick fron time to time.Go for it.
