I get hire cars for going out on business now and again. I normally get an Astra and Vauxhall seem to make pretty nippy petrol models. Don't know what the Astra TDIs are like but might be worth a look. I really like Astras - nice and comfy and they handle pretty well.

I got a Focus TDCi a while ago. Was really disappointed when I realised I'd been lumbered with a diesel but I actually really enjoyed it. Loads of turbo lag but, if you keep the revs up, they really fly. But then, if you wanted to keep the revs up and boot it about, why would you buy a diesel?! lol. Was very good at motorways speeds though.

HOw about the new Leon Cupra TDi, 150 bhp and 235 lb/ft, think 0 -60 is about 8.2 which isn't too shabby for an oil burner.

Chippable to 190 and 300 lb/ft if thats your thing.

Your budget probably won't stretch to any of the "PD" engined VAGs, or Crocus TDci.

Anything with the Vag 110 engine is only a £280 Uspolute remap away from 150bhp, 230lbs.ft however.

Suggest you want something with a reasonably firm setup ~ golfs tend to be soft n squidgy. SEATs a bit firmer but don't expect scooby handling. (edit 'cos you won't .... you currently have a golf )

Leon TDI 110 has same suspension as Cupra model - get a set of Cupra 16" , or TT 17" rims (both relatively easy to come by and quite cheap) and you have a reasonable handling, reasonably quick car and 50mpg.

Fabia TDi

Comfy, refined, posses the VW PD engine and is in your price bracket.
