Followed one earlier today - tip-toeing around the country lanes, braking mid bend etc. etc.

Are they very tricky in the wet? Or was he just a crap driver? Maybe he'd have been better off with a 320 and saving a few bob for some extra lessons!

Very very tricky in the wet......321/340 bhp (e36/e46)..and RWD makes for scary driving in the wet but real stormers in the dry!

DSC makes BMW's very safe in the wet and easy to drive hard.

All the current gen. 3 series I've driven have been awful in the wet.

Not because of the set of wheels you might expect either.

Yeah, all RWD car are dreadful this time of year, every time I go out, I wonder if I am going to get home alive.

got a best motoring vid on my pc with 2x360's,2x m3's and 2 Evo 7's

The m3's have a real hard time out of the corners and one actually loses it while trying to pass the slower evo7 (gta)
This was in the dry as well!

mind you one guy nearly ditched the 360 while trying to catch up

Yeah, my car's crap this time of year, got to take it steady. All RWD are more tricky in the wet.

I've owned two Beemers, a 323 (2.5) coupe and a 328 convertible. And they are a handful in the wet, very different than in the dry but not has bad as you would imagine. Both had 17in Alpina's with Michiline pilot sports, though I'm sure it must be a different thing trying to put 343 bhp dowm in a M3 in the wet.

The convertibles are a bag of sh1te in the dry or the wet, just ******* awful! I had mine for just over two months before I happened to drive a scoob. Two days later the BM was gone and I had me a Type R and some cash Four days later the engine in the scoob blew up 9weeks, a right cross and a left hook later, the garage owner payed in full for the repair

The E46 M3's are a doddle in the wet because of the DSC, but even with that off they are surprisingly good due to the diff, don't compare to the old m3s because they are worlds apart.

Like any RWD cars, they will be a bit more tricky in the wet - without DSC. But never to the extent you have to tip-toe around bends etc.

With DSC - no problemo.

Now, Porsches - thats another story - they can bite your head off in the wet

Depends on the model, many are just fine in the wet as it's not only BMW that have girly electronic gizmos to keep them on the road

At least the Porsches that are a handful in the wet have an excuse i.e. they have plenty of power whereas some of the lower powered 3 series are a handful without any significant power

Jesus I drove my Cerbera in slushy and pissing it down conditions without any problems, it just demands respect thats all, you drive to the conditions doesnt mean you cannot make rapid progress....

Tigger - just try and put your anti-BMW biases aside for a couple of minutes.

Most rational people agree (when you put aside personal opinions on image/value or whatever your hangups with the car) that the 3 series has a well sorted chassis, whatever the model.

You don't need a powerful car to lose the back end in the rain - just a poor driver going too fast and a bunch of bad luck - i.e. lift off etc etc.

A M3 with the DSC off, and a 911 with the PMS off - want to guess which one will bite your head off first? By your logic, the Porsche will have a bad chassis.

I once span a mate's (cough cough ) 328i in the wet. Luckily, he wasn't with me, I didn't hit anything & nothing hit me so no damage ... and he still doesn't know

IMHO, the handling is good, safe and predictable to a point ... but when it let go it went VERY quickly, no chance of catching it. I had an MGB GT V8 for a couple of years so I'm no stranger to getting the tail out but the 328 snapped out too quick for me.

I think the grip and back-end geometry is not set up to slide -- it's meant to grip. So if it does let go, it's gonna let go at high lateral G and go very quickly! Don't get me wrong, I was provoking it ... and it bit me back, hard.

I have no driver aids apart from ABS and RFC.

Nowhere in my post did I mention bad chassis design, you have brought that up and as you know BMW's so well I can only assume ....

It is typical on here that if someone criticises a BMW (not me this time) then someone such as yourself has to leap in and defend them this time by making a throwaway comment about Porsche. Your argument about a poor driver going too fast being all you need to lose the back end in the wet is true, but in that case why single Porsche out as being in your opinion worse than BMW.

As for your little M3 vs 911 comparison test I would like to see it done as I think you may be in for a shock. It's not only BMW who have moved forward in terms of chassis design and handling you know.

One final question and I keep asking this to the BMW brigade who hang out on Scoobynet, but am yet to get an answer. Why do you all get so upset when someone dares to question BMW's as the 'ultimate driving machine'? You are on a Scooby forum, a car pretty much diametrically opposed to a BMW so not everyone on here is going to be a fan of the Bavarian barge. If you all want to wax lyrical about how wonderful BMW's are then why not hang out with your own kind on a BMW forum?

I managed to spin a Pug 406 on a wet roundabout at 30mph from a lift off. Far worse than the Scooby in this respect.

Tiggers: Actually, its just you mate, not anyone else. Most people on this board are petrolheads, and as such do not hand to have their head in the sand about particular marques. SO in answer to your question, I don't think this is a board where everyone slags off non-Scooby cars, just because it is a Scooby forum. I take it you own a Honda, I have seen you singing its praises - why in that case do you do this on a Scooby forum?

For the record, I have spent the last 3 weeks test driving 996s (C2) as I am changing the M3 for one. I feel well qualified and given I am selling the BM for a Porka, I also feel I am not anti-Porsche, and Pro-BMW!

Where in my post did I say that? Nowhere actually. I just notice that if anyone on here posts anything mildly negative about BMW's particularly the M3 a group of people of which you are one feel it necessary to jump to it's defence. My question really is why do you feel it necessary to do this every time as it's going to happen on a non-BMW forum. No other car mentioned on here elicits this response.

I'm not going to go back over my reasons for my dislike of the marque - they are well documented elsewhere on this board, but I am not the only one on here who is not keen on them despite your comment to the contrary. I am a 'petrolhead' as you put it, I just happen to think BMW's are vastly overrated - why do you see it fit to contest my status as a 'petrolhead' just because I don't like one of your favourite marques.

As for my comments on the Honda you are right I have sung it's praises on here when people on here have asked about the model in question. The difference is that if someone was to post something negative about it then I would not feel the need to wade in every time at length about why they are wrong, not really something you can say about you and your beloved BMW's.

Anyway I also happen to have a Scoob so your comment is invalidated even further.

I think it's fair to say that we will never see eye to eye on this so I suggest we leave it - it is Christmas after all, a time of peace and goodwill to all men (even if they do like BMW's ).
