Should I buy a Rover 800 as a run around
#1
My scoob was nicked a few months back, not sure what car I want next. I'm thinking about buying a P reg Rover 800 (as it's cheap) it's done 145K will it last another year? it's the 2 litre jobby.
Cheers,

It just says 800 on the back, deffo non turbo and it don't think it would go fast even if it was pushed of a cliff!! It's got allyos, wood (sort of) and a small spoiler, all factory fitted, multi changer in the boot.

Get a 600 instead.
Not much difference in terms of room, but miles more reliable. My sister works for a Rover Dealership in the Service Dept, and she says that they hardly ever get 600s in for problems. Mainly down to the fact that they're mostly Honda!

Keep the 800. we all know they are crap, but its a £600 smoker, image shouldn't enter the equation. If its cheap to insure, easy on the juice and should last the year you want to keep it, then there's no need to worry about anything else.

I know it's c**p, image is the last thing I'm worried, after the owning a scoob, I'm enjoying being not noticed, not bothered where it's get parked, £400 a year to insure, it's a stop gap until somthing else pushes my buttons. Just trying to found out if the engines are any good, are they Honda?

£600 quid is too much mate aim for few hundred less and you'd be at the right figure.
The 2.0 Engine is pretty robust, but it's everything else that isn't!
Agree with 600's only thing I've seem go wrong on them is the distributor units.

The engines are lousy on these. Valve burn out and head gaskets go warping the head. Have a 220GTi and it was a nightmare. Friends at work had 820s and we all had nothing but trouble.
600 was far better. 2.3 in the 600 was a Honda unit if I remember correctly and should be unburstable.

I had one a few years back, bought it as a non runner with a knackered engine caused by the cooling system silting up with bits of rusty radiator, its not the engine thats really the problem, as with most Rovers the cooling system is a bit marginal so it doesnt have any spare capacity for poor maintenance wheras a lot of other cars will put up with it. At 600 its not a lot of money but you can get them even cheaper so if it conks out leave it where it drops.
Like the man said, see it as a smoker and you wont go wrong, not too bad on fuel or other costs. I quite liked mine with its Leather Recaros which were the high spot really, the rest of the intrior was minging grey plastic, handling was er sort of ok if you didnt expect much of it and the performance wasnt that bad, it did 0-60 in what about ten, you need to rev then but its not that great and idea cos they sound horrid but it did drag itself around reasobly quickly, go and buy a 1.0 Saxo or simlar run that for a month and then come bck to the Rover, it will feel rapid as opposed to coming from a Scoob !
