Evening folks, new member here. I have come on as Dave (RB5_245) seem to live on this site, and I obviously can't afford a scooby, what with my £20 a day irn bru habit.....

I was thinking of getting a pulsar soon, but so far I have found out that the geraboxes are weak links, and they are rare in silver. Anyone got any tips/advice about them for me?

Muchos gracias in advance!

AFAIK, they only come in Black (common as), Gunmetal, Red (rare as) and white.

IIRC, the Red's were the UK batch of 70 and are badged as Sunny's although identical bar a couple of minor specification differences.

Oh yeah, they are bloody quick.

Apparently, brakes are crap, gearboxes can go and it eats wheel bearings if you put big rims on.

LOL

Cheers for the info. Any websites around that can give me info? There is a silver one for sale, and it looks fantastic.

Red floats my boat, black and gunmetal don't really do it. I know a few peeps with them, so I'm gonna pick their brains. I'd buy myself a nice scooby, but I'd need to sell my kidney, lungs, legs etc Be a bit difficult to drive that way though....

hmmmm, decisions decisions.....

They did a dodgy metalic green one aswell IIRC
The brakes are supposed to be pretty poor as standard and I think it is recommended to put larger wheels on so you can lower the profile on the tyres to improve the handling. Jap imports have an umbrella built into the drivers side door pillar
Looked into getting one of these about 5 years ago but the insurance was silly on an import and it was hard and expensive to find a uk gtir. I found the GTI-r owners site was a good source of info think a guy called Caleb used to run that - cant remember.

You'd probably be surprised....

The GTiR was made from 1990 on an H plate till 1993 on a K plate.
There are some later registrations, like a few L's and even an R believe it or not, but most are H - K.

The average GTiR will cost you circa £4,000 to around £6,000.

For similar money you can get an early WRX 4 door with 260 bhp. (M or N reg)

A Jap garage near me has 2 at present (white and a black), and a few WRX's for similar money.

Insurance and fuel won't be that much more with a Scoob.

Get a Scooby, you know it makes sense!

Nobody has mentioned that they are very very ugly and are based on a Nissan Sunny in the first place, you have to be keen on performance to want one of those, yuk.

Well, thats kinda the point innit? If it's fast who cares? I'd prefer to be belting round k/hill, or twatting up crail, than posing on the high st...

Saying that, I'm not going to run off and buy a skoda or anything.....

http://forum.gtiroc.com/phpbb2/ is the site you want for more info
Brakes are sh*t at the best of times
Gearboxes aren't know where near as bad as there made out to be
Wheel bearings aren't a problem
Clutch changes are expensive as its easiest to remove the engine and box as one but there a pretty straight foward diy job with a hired engine crane.
finding a decent one can be hard
Insurance and running cost will be pretty much the same as a scooby and the scooby will handle better

Cheers! That'll be helpful. but for the scooby I want, I'd need like, 15 grad. I don't think I could risk getting a really old import. The cheapest one I've ever seen belongs to one of my neighbors, and is, a complete bag of poo... That was 6 grand. I just like pulsars. It's just a mad notion I have the now....

my best mate just bought one with a full German service history, full Castrol RS service history in UK since 1998, with 110000kms on it, in black, for £2000.

it's taxed tested tidy and blo0dy fast, and completely 100% original with £800 of receipts, 2 spare sets of wheels and entire spare front suspension setup, there's not even speaker holes in the parcel shelf...

£800 TPF&T 21 year old 4 yrs NCD... but a Welsh postcode!!!

Not slagging them off but was at Interpro on Sunday for a RR day, and the 2 that were in their workshop, BOTH had the engines missing! Could well be innocent, but my money is on them both having gone bang!. Very quick, but a bit fragile I reckon

The pistons can be weak(cast) once pushed past the 300bhp mark but have been known to with stand 1.4-1.6bar on standard internals with proper tuning their biggest problem is they don't like det not that any other engines do but these are partically prone to breaking the ring lands when det occurs, saying that though in the Us they are getting 500whp+ on completely standrad engines but using racefuel!!!
The usual problem with them is the boost gets wound up without the fuelling and ignition being setup so they blow as any other engine would

i own a pulsar thats had a lot of mods done to it and i have driven it hard for a year since i owned it. if you service them regulary you shouldn't have any problems. mine runs 1.3bar and has never missed a beat.

PS-(scoobies aren't a problem)!!!!!!!!!!!

I had one for a year and sold it due to HUGE running costs (used as daily driver and to go away at weekends) Had a lot of problems with the car (clutch, suspension, fuel pump, brakes, gearbox syncro's were on the way out) I replaced all broken bits with uprated items (worked out cheaper).
I REALLY miss the noise, flames, grip, the look on drivers faces in expensive cars as you tore past but don't miss the problems at all. The fuel gauge also seemed to move literally in realtime.
A friend of mine also had an R (longer than I had mine and in the same state of tune) and the only thing he had to replace was a lamda sensor...pick carefully and just bear in mind it's hardly a new car and you may have to sort old car problems.
The only scoobs I raced seemed to be Sports as they really were easy meat

16vmarc-279bhp in a Pulsar would see you into the 12's at over 100mph too.

edited to spell Marc's name properly.

Pickle, they could quite easily have been having an uprated rebuild. They don't just pop like scoobies do. They normally go on high boost where the fuelling isn't spot on, properly mapped they'll last for ages.

Ginga's ring lands went with the help of some NOS I believe.

Had a UK one for two years before I got the scoob. Official UK cars were red, black or white only. Imports also came in grey and green (very rare).

Sold it cause it was so expensive to run - had one bill for £2,500 which included a top end rebuild (cam tensioner failed, damaging cams and followers), gearbox rebuild (one of the bearings supporting the front diff failed) and new clutch. Never dared add up all the bills! Still like the look of them and the fact I could tell people I drove a nissan sunny!

It was quick (quicker in standard tune than a standard uk turbo) and had a wonderful raw edge to driving it. Great fun. But it is quite an old car now... As others have said, there's a lot of rough cars out there, so beware.

The only reason for me owning an MY00 scoob is becuase I have a family to haul around and my GF and even my mother would have beaten me if I had bought another GTIR.

Owned one for about 2 years and sold it to buy a house. Like I said it was only other commitments that stopped me buying another one. Coming back chrimbo shopping last Sunday I met up with a lad who owns a GTIR which I know is still restricted and he could accelerate faster than me but couldn't get over 110ish.

Don't think it wont break cos it will those who never have a breakage are the exception. Mate of mine is running close to 400BHP and is on his 4th rebuild and we have a bet that his g'box won't last 6 months. The MPG is a joke even cruising whereas I can get 30+MPG out of my scoob. Insurance is high but on a par with WRXs.

Fast as you like, handle well, I like the interior and a good one looked after will give you loads of smiles. If it were me buying again it would be a weekend fun car only.
