Hi
my brother has a 993 Carrera 2S and what a fantastic car it is. If I were going for a porker I think it would have to be RWD. The Carrera 2S has sports suspension 18inch rims and more power than the standard 993.
Thanks

Never owned one, but worked with em b4.
Lovely cars, last "real 911" as many would say due to the cooling ofcours
Personally I think the biggest thing to look out for when buying second hand is to check its had any biggys replaced. By this I mean brake discs, clutches etc. These are often really quite expensive - Ive seen cars advertised as "just completed £2000 service" - you dont want to buy a car only to find it needs a lot of work done. The 993 is ofcourse damn nearly a super car, so quite a few have been on track or will have been driven hard. They can take it though, just make sure theyve got full PSH - and look for over regular pad/oil changes which may signify track work. Lovely cars, if a little dated internally - still holding money well too, which is nice.

jimi,
yip 993's are perhaps the most loved of all the 911's, thats why a decent late 993 is worth more than a later 996, well its no supprise really as anyone knows the only place for water on a 911 is in the washer bottle! (I do admit however GT3 RS's are perhaps the exception to this rule....)
My vote is for a 993RS, quite simply they are sublime, however just a bit pricey (at like £60k thats a slight understatement!!) if you want RHD tho! LHD not too bad at mid £30k-40. Other than the awesome turbo, the C4S is the next best loved by most- Turbo body & running gear mated to normal 993 engine, C2S not so loved as just has a wide body over a standard C2.
Personally other than an RS or Turbo I'd have a C2 get it chipped & bung on some freer flowing silencers for aural pleasure & you will have RS power, sort the suspension- perhaps the ultimate set uo for road/trackdays is the fully adjustable Bilstein PSS9 kit & RS ARB's & drop links, tho Eibach springs & new standard shocks are a damm good improvement too.
Lots of advice available over on the Porsche forum on Pistonheads.com

There has been a lot written about 993's on this BBS - just do a search...
I had the money for a 993 but opted for a Boxster S on the basis of finances and running costs. Remember some 993's are now coming up for nearly 10 years old and regardless of quality expensives things start to wear out - not least the suspension, gearbox, top end engine, clutch etc..
They are beautiful looking cars - my recommendation (having owned a 3.2 and a 964) - is to buy from a Porsche dealership - they will only stock the *best* examples left and the 12 month warranty is bulletproof - pay over the odds and get the right car - there isnt anyhting like a bargain 993.... (eg. 911 virgins often have traded 993's from the dealers - they have them because Porsche UK won't - nuff said).

I have had a 993 C4 Varioram for about 8 months now ( a 17 year gap since my last 911). I had it mapped (full day) at Ninemeister and had an uprated clutch and lightened flywheel fitted which helps pickup considerably from the now dyno'd 309bhp. To allow it to sound a bit better I also have a Fabspeed Sports exhaust and induction kit from the States. It now goes and sounds wonderful.
They really are magificent driving cars and built from "granite".
Highly recommended.

Re-Map was done for £500 plus VAT. Retains existing ECU. Takes all day due to allowing heat to dissipate between runs.
Noticably quicker ( and I am not a graet believer in substantial gains on normally aspirated cars). I noticed nothing with chipping an M3 EVO.
On the C4 (when absolutely cold ) it was 282.5bhp before and 309 bhp after.

Hi all
I am so split as what model to get and the prices vary so much between all the different 993`s.
I have seen a turbo model with a out put of 450BHP for around 50k and i was well tempted but that is a hell of a lot of money for a car that i wont use all that much.
The 993 was made from 1993-1997 so even if i got a 97 it would be older the my impreza.
Thanks for all the advice,i am still looking.

I agree mate... the 993 looks soooo much better than the pre-face lift 996s.
I am really trying to get my hands on a 993C4S... very difficult. There are a bunch of C2Ss around but they are supposed to be a bit of a handful. Also the C4S gets the turbo running gear... basically a turbo minus the engine and (£4k!) spoiler

Skittles
The "S" bit of a C2/4 is the same - ie both have the Turbo wheels, brakes, wide body, suspension etc. Both have the retractable rear spoiler and not the whaletail of the Turbo. Off course the C4 is 4wd, though I was under the impression that they are otherwise identical in spec (or "S-yness" if you like).
The wider rubber means that you have stacks of grip even on the C2 but when it does let go, you'll be in real trouble and are just a passenger. Having said that you're not going to get that close to the edge on the public road. The C2 isn't a handful unless you're on the (track and on the) limit.

Mate of mine has one of the last C4S 97/P took his dealer about 2 months to source a "proper" one. It was about 20,000 miles and cost £38k - all the best ones are still in the dealer network.

HI
As some of you have said where is the best place to get one from? a dealer,e-bay,private sale or at an auction.
The dealer would be the best bet but they are so over the top when it comes to the selling price.

I would try and get a car privately as you can save loads of money. Dealers always put on a healthy margin.
Check out private adds and then when you find a car you like, get it checked at a dealer to make sure it is okay. That's how I helped my brother get his C2s.
Thanks

I have a '95 993 turbo, bought it 6 months ago from porker main dealer - had 45k on clock and was £47k.
Had a evo 7 prior to that and a uk scooby before that.
Porker actually cheaper to run than the evo! insurance is half what the evo was! plus porker only needs serviving every year/12000 miles and is about £600 a time.
Its a superb car - very very well built, comfy, noisy enough and will do 0-100mph in 8.8seconds, and 188mph - another league from sti/evo performance.
Downsides - doesnt grip as well in the wet as evo - but still better than uk scooby.Dont tend to get as many negative reactions in porker as I did in evo.
Go for a 993- C2S/C4S/turbo - they are going to be the cars that hold their value.

I chose the 996 over the 993 for several reasons.
For starters they are much much safer cars to drive. Some say thats a negative but I dont want a car thats gonna bite me in the **** at a moments notice (call me a wus !)
996's are cheaper to run, service, repair etc. For a start they are much easier & quicker to work on than 993's so labour rates are much lower as less man-hours are used.
The interior is leaps & bounds better, no floor hinged pedals & a sterio that you can reach ! Ergonomically its loads better.
As a car to use every single day, the 996 is a superior vehicle in most ways though I agree thats its lost a little of its "character" in the process. Its roomier, quieter, & safer......all things a "sports car" in the purist sense of the word should NOT be !
But having said that, its quicker in a straight line (a standard 996 C2 does 0-100 in 10.5 secs !!) & A-B accross country, its easier to fix & cheaper to run & maintain....which swung it for me as a daily drive.

Ro,
I went to select between a C2S 993 or a C2 996 last weekend... My heart was really set on a 993. After spending some time with the two cars, I doubt I could like with the 993 on a daily basis. While I think the wide bodied 993s look nicer then the standard 996, they are a little too "focused" for normal use. The interior is shocking!
Now the hunt starts for a 996 with the GT3 kit, Tiptronic and 18" turbo wheels...
