Porsche 911(993) have you had one?

The Rear main Seal issue on 996 requires major work, if you are buying used make sure the work is done or its not required. This thread on rennlist show's where to check and what the numbers are.

I bought a 996 C2 new back in March. It's a superb car in every respect, and have absolutely no regrets. Make sure you take a long test drive, it's a car which gets better the longer you drive and own it, unlike cars such as the evo 6 (which I have previously owned) whose greatest moments are the 15 minute turbo-nutter test drives.
I've also test driven a BMW M3, and compared to the 996 it was very disappointing in terms of perceived build quality, engine note, and the feel of all the major controls. After all the hype I'd read about them, it certainly came as quite a surprise.

What a good thread - thanks guys. A lot of good information. I must say, I'm looking to change cars next year and I keep getting this calling for a Porsche
What really made me think was my neighbour turning up in his brand new 996, with the full GT3 bodykit - totally fab car. I would also second what Ro said about the sports exhaust. My car used to be the loudest in the road - not anymore. It is just a fantastic noise. It has a slight metallic edge that makes it sound like a Carrera Cup racing 996 You don't realise how restrained the normal 996 is until you hear one with a sports exhaust.
As far as I can make out, running costs would certainly be no more than a Scoob (slightly higher insurance I suspect). The residuals on these cars makes the finance deals very attractive too.
Jimi - if you want someone to come and drool over Porsches with you, drop me a line!
Cheers
Chris

skittles,
Mine has PSM, never switched it off to see what it adds or detracts. I think that all C4's had PSM so probably not an option to have just TC. I think even with PSM off the ABS works in corners, it knows when its going round a bend seemingly...LOL

Sounds good Jimi. If this is a private sale (I'm assuming it is) - don't forget to:
Check the chassis number against the V5
Get an HPI check done (speak to Porsche UK aswell - they should have the cars history)
Get it inspected by a specialist or respected dealer.
You will have little come back on a private sale and this is a lot of money to be shelling out. All the above shouldn't cost you more than £200. Money well spent IMHO.

You are right when you say its a private sale, the dealers are far more expencive for the same car, when i get it i will let you know.

Incidently Jimi, I was talking to a bloke at work about his lovely 993 C2 which has just appeared in the car park.
The conversation went:
"Beautiful car" I said, "What sort of BHP has it got?"
"380"
"What??!!!"
"It's been supercharged"
I'll be looking for a demo ride soon

Hi chris
Are we both going to get a porker then?i really love my scooby so i am reluctant to sell it. The other thing is a good porker will cost me a lot of money and the upkeep could be a lot of money to me.

Don't tempt me I don't know if it would be hugely more expensive to run than the Scoob to be honest. They certainly hold their value, but I don't think I would be able to pile on the miles like I've done on the Scoob. MPG isn't any worse (probably better!).
I think there is a good case for going around and taking your time to have a look at a few cars. There are always loads for sale. I would really get the professional inspection done as well. There are a few things to watch out for and you don't want to be caught out.
Good luck!
Cheers
