A fair number of the 330d owners on http://www.bmwland.co.uk have used Tuning Boxes on their cars. They all rave about the increased performance and many also note increased fuel economy.

AFAIK similar technology is available for the X5.

Check out http://www.tuningbox.com.

Just spotted that you're in Scotland - there's a meet at the end of the month in Edinburgh so you could pop along and have a chat - at least two of the 'Tuningboxed' 330d owners will be there.

Isn't it possible to get a proper remap? I wouldn't put a tuning box on a car of that value. They're very crude devices according to my understanding

Just found this:

http://www.auto-amd.com/bmw330d.asp

Give them a call and ask what the difference is between a tuning box and a remap - I'm sure you'll pay the extra few hundred!

Remaps are certainly available.

With the tuning box suggestion, I was simply passing on the experience of a number of drivers who have had tuning boxes on upwards of 10 different cars - NONE have ever experienced any problems and ALL sing the praises of the technology.

I would be very interested to hear what your concerns were regarding the Tuiningbox?

They're just very crude. It can't change the fueling as precisely as a proper map. It won't break your engine, but it won't be as drivable as it could be.

Accepting that the tuning box only alters fueling and not other factors, I can see how you might categorise the product as crude when compared with a full remap - which may also address issues over and above fueling - BUT it is warrantied, reasonably priced (in terms of £ per bhp / lb/ft) and well reviewed by consumers.

IMHO, well worth it regardless of vehicle prestige/quality/value.

Try Upsolute.

HERE

Standard pricing policy (under £300) ~ I'd recommend them.

As above - remaps are technically superior to tuning boxes. The latter can only extend the injection duration. This leads to higher boost pressures.

Remaps tend to advance the injection point also, and actively request more boost. Bigger "window" therefore for fuel input (which helps avoid overfuelling and therefore excess smoke).

PS - website has an open forum ~ you might want to have a search (?)

I just hope your turbo doesn't go bang... 'coz BMW won't want to pay for it if it's been fiddled with, and no doubt the chip company won't be too keen either, what with the turbo alone being £700+ VAT with labour on top...

Not a particularly unusual price for a turbo.

I'd check warranty info with anyone you select.

I would say I've not heard of many happy superchips customers, but maybe their diesel experience is better (?????)

I didn't say it was an unusual price, mik. But, we've had several go at work, on 320ds (M47 and M47N), 330ds (M57 and M57N), 530ds and X5s. So beware about tuning them if it's going to affect the warrenty.

All the above have different turbos by the way!

www.tunit.co.uk

They make easily removable boxes. I KNOW THEY ARE POSSIBLY NOT THE BEST - but they are good and don't harm your engine if that's all you want. Re-maps can be a hassle.
