I like my rs cars and the escort cosworth is the car for me,BUT even i would be hard pushed to spend £12-15k on an escort cos when you could but an Evo for the same.
A very hard choice, but i think it would be the Evo!

One of the reasons I didn't move from my Escort to an Evo was the huge cost of running an Evo for everyday driving.
I was one of the seemingly few who drove the Escort everyday to get maximum enjoyment, rather than bring it out on a dry day to drive down the road and back to the garage again for another six months...
An Evo would cripple most people with the fuel costs and 4-4.5k service intervals.
The other problem with the Evo is that the regular change (5 to 6 to 7 to..) will mean your car is suddenly the old model and depreciates loads more than necessary.
Ford may have lost out with the Escort and poor sales but it did mean there is only one version. Yes there was the big turbo and small turbo version but in externally they look identical plus, in this case, it's the original that is preferred so the older car is probably worth more money!
£17k for the Monte seems a bit much though as the changes were minimal. I didn't even like the white OZ wheels, so for me it would be worth LESS than a standard model!!

Since they first came out I always wanted an escort cossie. I think they are a very good looking car. However, they are a car of their time. They dont cut it power or delivery wise as an evo. Remember the evo is standard 280 bhp compared to the 227ish of an escort cossie. Reliability and costs will go up if mods are made to get to evo levels of performance. Granted that the cosworth wont have anywhere near the depreciation levels of a new evo, but maybe a second hand evo4/5 wont lose that much now anyway.
At the end of the day the escort cossie is still a lovely and rare car and Id still have one just for looks alone!
Wouldnt swap my car for one though

Argh sounds like im saying its old and thus poop, im not!! Im saying that power wise 15 years ago 225 was a lot, and still does cut the mustard, albeit with the help of a little chip

The Cosworths are (in my opinion) cheap to maintain, unless you're modding over 320bhp which starts to need a lot of major changes and you introduce all sorts of reliability issues. THEN, I'd certainly agree that the cost is probably equal to (or maybe more) than an Evo.
In standard form, a Sierra/Sapphire/Escort should be manageable. My Escort was approaching 9 years old and was sound, but perhaps a 10-15 year old Sierra will have other problems purely due to the age. Ultimately the Escort will reach a point where it does begin to fall apart without lots of TLC (which also means money!).
That's why my Escort had to go to make way for a brand new car.

7 grand is about right for a 3dr which is clean. Anything less and you're buying trouble.
Sapphires don't hold value as much as there was a lot more of the made, especially 2wd versions which aren't worth as much as a 4x4 Sapphire. RS500 again as big money, as much as Escort Cosworths.
