Insurance groups dont change???
#1
On the thread about the focus RS somebody said that insurance groups dont change for cars...
Could anyone explain why my phase 1 clio 16V was group 11 when I bought it then shot up to group 15 a few years later?
I was well p**sed off. The group 11 was the main reason for getting the car, as it had 137BHP hot hatch performance but without the Group 14/15 rip off insurance.
Anyway, my premium went through the roof and the car had to go.
Insurance companies told me a lot of boy racers had crashed them and it had gone up to group 15!!!
In parkers guide it does say group 11-15 for the insurance group...strange.
Anyone know why????

If people start falling off the road a lot, and the cars go walkabout without the owners permission, what do you expect the insurance companies to do? The risk of insuring the car will have increased, therefore the grouping will be increased to compensate.
Insurance groups can and do change, but it is a far from regular thing. The most recent I heard of was the VW Golf 130&150PD TDi which both had their insurance grouping go up by two bands. Both are now group 13E, having been 11E previously.
Just out of interest I just had a look at the ABI groups, and the Focus RS is still shown as being group 16A.

I thought they could change, but did see that somebody was quite sure on the focus thread that they could not change!
It makes sense to me that if they get nicked a lot, or crashed by a lot of people then the group should go up.
