RS6 - deprecition disaster?
#1
Hi,
I am thinking of trading in my M3 for someting different. I love the M, but have had a BM for some years so fancy a change.
I was thinking along the lines of the RS6. I am planning a test drive, but I hear they are a bit uninvolving. Furthermore, they seem to be a depreciation disaster - you can pick one a few months old for £45k!!!!!!!!!! Main dealer!!!! (new: £60k)
Anyone have any experiences to share? Know when the current A-6 based cars get revised?
PS - typo on title, I can't edit it for correction!

My main dealer has an ex demo for sale and they want around £58K for it. I havent seen any for £45K. If they exist I would buy one of them rather than new....good on ya, great car

Check out the audi used car list, I saw one there... unless I am mistaken?
The other option is the new M5... its another BM, but every 2 models BMW radically develop the cars, should it should feel less familiar. However, these will take some time to come to sensible second hand values...

How about a Spec C for everyday and spend the rest on a Caterham?
RS6 does lose money - but it depends on which one you go for - the Avant estate is a lot more popular and so keeps its value a little better than the saloon - but then if you dont need the boot then there is not much point.
M3 CSL? Great car - but maybe not worth the extra money over a standard M3.
Must be hard to make a choice - but good luck anyway!

What about an old M5? They seem to be around the 25K mark now, still rated better than every other super-saloon by everyone who drives cars in the group.
If I wasn't ploughing all my readies into a house I'd get one rather than the Skoda I'm looking at.

I drove an RS6 recently (after driving M3/M3 CSL) and was HORRIBLY dissappointed - it was a real letdown. It was fast in a straight line and built well. That's about all the good I could say about it sadly. I was expecting so much but it just didn't deliver.
Go for a drive and see what you think.

Thanks for all the input.
Old M5 would be good, but wouldn't feel "new" - i.e. everything would be over familiar! They are a real bargain at the moment, with the new 5 just coming in.
CSL - its a bit too focused for me i.e. not a runabout. Also second hand is still £55k+. IMHO, its no worth the money - for me - as I would place more emphasis on comfort and toys than the average CLS buyer.
As for the RS6, I would prefer a saloon, i think it looks loads better.
Spec C - hmmm, dodn't think about this one, will read up on the recent Evo article... I thinkit may be a little too focused, i.e. like the CSL...

This sums up the feed back I seem to get on the car... Beautifully built, but not really engaging... I am hoping to set up a test drive for the weekend.

Hi,
just sold my RS6 Avant. Bought it brand new in Jul, list price was £61k. Supplying dealer offered me £44k last week. The car had done 6k miles and is mint.
After much leg work, I bailed out at £50k and bought another E46 M3. There is no doubt that the RS6 is a depreciation time bomb - Audi UK keep dumping a load onto the dealer network at silly prices.
However, the RS6 is a cracking car and I loved the ownership experience. There is no way you can judge it's ability on a 1 hour test drive. Impressive that a 2 ton car is quicker round the ring than the M3 which is no slouch.

I have driven RS4's and RS6's, I ended up buying a M5 as it was a lot more involving to drive! I think the RS's will hold their money quite well, like the RS2 has, they are all built to limited numbers I believe.
My M5 was 59K new, I paid 32K when it was nearly 2 years old and I guess I've lost about 5k in the 8 months I've owned it! I don't think you'll find a 2001 RS4 for less than 33K where as you'll find plenty of M5's for less than 28K!
Still rather have a M5, how about a Holden GTS!?!??!
Dom.

What about a Porker? You can get a lovely 996 C4/2 coupe with full history, and in a tasty spec for that kind of money (50k mark plus/minus 10k for age/spec).
Depreciation there on would be small (in percentage terms) and nothing will get close for driving experience, sound, build quality and feel good.

RS2's and RS4's will allways hold their money as production was limited...I belive only 300 RS4's come into the country officialy out of a 4,000 worldwide run. The RS6 is just a "normal" production run and so depreciation will be high.
