Unhappy

Not sure if this is in the right section, but here goes...basically my 1.8 diesel van (Ford Fiesta) is a b@stard to start in the morning. I give it 7 or 8 "heats" but it still struggles to fire.

I've checked all the glow plugs and they are fine. So I am stumped

Filters are due a change but can't see it being these ?

Also, the relay to turn the heater plugs off only lasts about ten seconds and then cuts in. Shouldn't they last nearer 20 seconds ?

Thanks for help

Matt

Matt all i keep coming across is this problem.
How did you check the glow plugs ????
Did you remove the plugs and check the tips????
Relay seems to be holding in okay.
I would go for pump timing.
Advance the fuel pump just before you hear the diesel knock.

Timed up properly it should start no problem!!!

Also the bleed pump on top of the filter housing could have a leak. The feed pipe going to the filter may have a pinhole in it.
This would draw the fuel back to tank and therefore it would take a while to prime again.....

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help Darren.

I took the glow plugs out completely and checked them. They all glowed as if they were new.

I'll try your advice, hopefully that will cure it...

the heater relays on these only give a full heat first time and it is not long enough when the cold comes thats most likely cause otherwise fuel leakback, timing, compression

or it is just feked

We used to test them by, unbolted the wire that links them all together. Clip a test light to the batter positive, then touch the probe end on each plug's terminal, the test light should light, if it doesn't the plug is fecked!

I've seen problems with the filter housings too, but in my experience they've just stopped working completely. I feel it's also unlikely to be the pump. Assuming that is that the car has been running ok and that the pump hasn't been messed with.

I know it's a really dumb question but, you are waiting for the light to go out before cranking aren't you?
