indeed they are tat.
a common problem with any VW according to future brother in law who is a VW nut and currently has an R32. First thing upgrades in any car he's ever had has been the stoppers.

Strange,
I've found the brakes to be excellent as have tuning firms that are offering performance upgrades. To quote.....
Even with their 540bhp twin turbo R32 the only mod that HPA Motorsports considered necessary was to cross drill the disks. To quote Marcel Horn from HPA :-
"I maintained the stock R32 brakes, only cross drilling them. I had been so impressed by their performance, I went on a hunch that they would stop this 3600lb car in ample fashion. They did not let me down. (13.1" front & 10.1" rear, an absolutely incredible stock set-up. 2piston floating front caliper).
60-0 .. 107.7 ft wow! ( GT2 Porsche 107ft)"
Note that the HPA R32 is heavier than the standard car with all the mods done to it.
Here's the link .....

Aye, but I have realised that appearance is not everything...
All the STis I've had.... flash looking four pots but were all absolute fade-prone crap!!
Curent M3 Evo....... SINGLE piston front callipers (albeit with big flashy floating discs..).... stops like God has twatted you in the face. Unbelievably powerful.
So, size and piston count can be misleading.

The brakes on the S2000 are awesome. Shortest stopping distance of any car bar the 911 when it was new (not sure if anything has surpassed it since). However they are not '4-pot' and don't look flashy but they DO DO the job My scooby owning mate was astonished by the braking of my S. He didn't think a car could stop that fast

Yes I know they do Daz, but I meant my 'current' car, an E36 M3 Evo. The current model, the E46 M3, does indeed get slated. The E36 was always renowned for amazing brakes so I'm not sure where BMW went wrong on the current model.
Edited to say I think they only get slated for fading on track days. On the road people complain far less. I'm sure its something to do with the weight of the car....

IIRC the brakes on the R32 are the taken straight off the Toureg which must weigh over 2.0 tonnes. They are much larger disks and are four pot calipers. Just because they dont have brembo, AP Racing, etc.. plastered across them doesnt make them crap. I have never found them wanting and the ABS only kicks in when absolutley necessary.
