Jaguar X Type
#1
Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a used X Type, probably a 2.5 Sport.
Opinions/experiences required please! I've heard tales of patchy build quality/reliability, and am wondering how good Jag dealers are.......

Know a few peeps with them and have read plenty of articles too..
I've heard that some of the early ones had a few build quality niggles but apparently most of that was sorted within the first 12 months..
For the brass you get plenty of kit, four-wheel drive, traditional Jag looks and plenty of poke too.
The Auto box isn't the best and can spoil the performance - so go for the manual box if you can.
all in all they're a good car and they're also a little different too...
In the right colour and with the right alloys (Sport trim would be my choice) I think they look the b0ll0x !!
Very different to a Cupra R - and I know which has the better interior... anyways - you pays your money...

MATRON!
So far I've looked into the A4, C class, 3, X type
Agree 3 series looks the best option. Not anti BMW, but it is a bit common. I'm starting to think a compact exec may not be the way to go. I love the look of the RX8, certainly different!

depends wot u r looking for and wot u used to driving....
i test drove a 2.5 last yr (no 3 litre available at the time at the garage) as a possible replacement for my Scoob !!
did not njoy it.......and god was it slow.
its a big car...maybe the 3.0 is much better ?
nice interior, seemed solid enough (compared to the scoob!). extras were xpensive so 2nd hand make sure u get one with lots of options.......iirc the sport was esp lacking in refinements you mite consider should be standard on a jag......
SE spec seemed to have the 'toys' i would have liked....
it aint for me......

Drove the 3 litre sport model, went like stink, it had an auto box so I used it, great road holding was in Milton Keynes so plenty of roundabouts to belt it round, 4 wheel drive the traction was excellent, it's what I will buy when the time comes to replace the Scoob

Why has no-one mentioned the fact that it is a badge engineered mondeo with 4WD and some tastier engines (at least the better ones are)?
For me that alone means I can't respect them as they aren't a "proper" jag. I'd take an old V12 XJ over Ford's finest any day.

Isn't the diesel X type FWD only? *Shudder* What has that got to do with Jaguars?

Yes there is a little parts sharing between Mondeo and X-Type, but its less than you think. This is not necessarily bad thing tho, look at the VW, Audi, Skoda parts bin !!! Plus the Mondeo is generally viewed by the motoring media as a good car.
I have a 3.0SE Auto for work, a scooby for the missus and a 295bhp MR2 Turbo for the weekends (shortly to be nearer 400bhp). The X is comfy, quick (231bhp) and different. The 3.0 does feel noticably quicker than the 2.5 - dunno why ?!?
The touchscreen SatNav is arguably one of the best satnavs available, and the 8"widescreen TV is cool - but not very useful. (Same as any TV in a car !) It handles well for a normal saloon, and 4wd is pretty good.
If I had to trim down to one car, I might look at BMW again. A BMW is a more involving drive and will be quicker round a track. But every bugger and his dog has a BMW nowadays ! So whilst I have a turbo terror for tracks\weekends, I'll have the Jag to take me to and from work.
All the best with your decision. Incidentally, I'm on the list to look at an RX8 when it's available too.

Can't believe that nobody has mentioned how appalling bad Jag dealers are. I was looking to buy 3 series, A4 or X type. BM and Audi dealers offered test drives and very helpful. Jag dealers were complete waste of time. If that's what they are like before they even sell a car I dread to think what the after sales service would be like.

Conversely, my local BMW dealer was completely and utterly useless ! Wandered over to Jag and was treated very well.
There's good and bad dealerships for every marque.

Just finished with an X 2.0 Sport from Hertz this week. Never really considered one before but after a week and 500 miles I was impressed.
Plus: Nice cabin, WAY better than a Mondy with bits of wood, lovely enclosed cockpit, chrome touches, and the wheel/gearlever touch and feel was good. Nice engine note, confident in the bends, strong brakes, firm ride without being crashy - overall a very satisfying drive.
Minus: Awful pedals, couldn't get the seat right to ensure clutch could go all the way without cranking my right foot back to get on the gas, no left foot brace. When pressing on I felt like I was sitting on the car rather than low down and in it.
If I was given one I'd be chuffed but between that and a 320i I would choose the Beemer. I've had one before and prefer the rear drive, more driver focussed chassis and the "Germanness".
Hope this helps.
