And to confirm that VW used high grade valves etc that allow unleaded to be used without modifications to the heads. They were designed for low octane American fuel (91 ron IIRC) when the type 2 Bay-window was introduced over the split-screen (a very sad day IMHO ) All bay-windows are therefore fine to run on unleaded.

Hope this all helps

Hi guy's...

Putting this up for a mate,

Just bought a type2 van 1600cc air cooled and I'm having problems with the engine when excellerating. It feels like it's missing and it's very juddery. It feels like fuel starvation but I've cleaned the carb out, put a new fuel filter in and still no joy. The guy I bought it from said that it was supposed to run on unleaded could this be the problem? Could the valves be burnt out through using unleaded petrol. The exhaust is blowing aswell at present I have a new one on order would this cause the feeling of fuel starvation?
Can any one shed some light on this for me ?
Cheers Paul

Can anyone help him as he's pulling his hair out at the mo...

Cheers,

G.

Could be fuel vapourisation. Those engine bays get very hot.

check the plug cables, maybe one of these is faulty.
Also take the distributer cap off, and give the points a clean.
Days of knack'd Beetle and similar probs were caused by too much carbon on points, and resulted in mis-firing. New cap = easy fix....

Just restored one of these. Would be worth upgrading if it hasnt already been done to a bosch blue ignition coil. Is all the engine bay tinware and seals in place?

Hrm. then im with the crowd blaming something straightforward in the ignition department - ht leads, plugs etc. Also check the timing.

I have a Type 2 guru sitting beside me who has just restored one of these supposed beauties

When he read this thread he shouted out "Carb Icing"

Riser pipes from the exhaust to the inlet manifold fill with rust or carbon deposits over time and dont get hot enough to keep the fuel/air mix as a vapour. Remember these manifolds are VERY VERY long.

2 ways to fix this problem.

1) Remote inlet manifold and clean pipes out using electric drill and length of welding rod/coat hanger (a bit billy-bodge but gets the job done pronto)

2) Get an IMDU (manifold heater). See links below for details and fitting instructions:

My Golf used to suffer badly from carb icing! Ahh, takes me back... happy memories of waiting on the hard shoulder for the heat to soak up into the carb.

Ok all sorted now, he has changed the fuel pump and it runs like a dream, well sort of, he mucked around with the timing so that needs to be rectified but apart from that he's happy,

Cheers for all the help guy's...
