Help!

Time has come to sell my M Plate Modeo 2.0 16v auto however....
it's had a slight problem now for a month, when its at standstill very occasionally the gearbox will try to enguage the engine slightly, making it fight (against me on the brake pedal) to surge, and in about 2 instances it managed to make the car stall.
Its done 58K from new.

So I pop down to my local ford dealers (where I get the car serviced) and ask for a bit of technical advice, as im figuring its a dicky sensor. I then get told its more likely to need serious gearbox work which in turn means the car is effectivly a write off at the labour prices they charge :O

I mean like WTF? Is this true that this automatically means serious gearbox work or are they talking out their collective behinds?

If anyone here tell me if they have had a similar problem on an auto and what caused it please, or any input at all would be great.

Thanks

Andrew

Tickover is completely normal, ie I could sit with the car in neutral for a sustained period and the tickover rpm would stay constant, and its about right at 850rpm ish.

Could be a problem with the torque converter, my old jag was doing the same thing.

Take it to a local auto box specialists rather than ford, cost me about £400 if i remember.

The auto boxes do suffer from sensor failures and usually noticeable only from cold.Try warming it up before you engage gear and see what happens...

Not sure from Cold as the engine rpm is higher anyway - never noticed it do it when cold.
It had a service 2 months ago although it was an intrim so im not sure if the trans fluid was changed but it was fully serviced at 46000 Miles.
Im taking it down Halford's this afternoon (If they can fit me in) and they are going to see if its the engine/idle etc or whether its definatley gearbox.
If its gearbox I will take it to an auto specilists.

Thanks for you help.
