Track Day Car Help please XXURGENTXX

Right .......... This evening im off to look at a potential additional car to complement the STI and 172. I'm looking for a cheap and cheerfull run around, for too and from work and also for occasional track use. The idea is to get something with a bit of go, which I can strip the seats etc out of, fit a roll cage and with a few small engine and body mods have a reasonable fun car to play in.
The car im gonna look at tonight is a Pug 205 1.9 GTi. Up for £700 but the guy needs the cash so £450 to £500 should secure it I think.
Is this a good car to do what I wanna do?
The second question is insurance. I had a quote from my insurers and they want £900 third party only ..hmmmmmm. I only pay £850 for a £24K STi. Any advice on where to go for a 6,000 mile policy with an insurer who is sensible mod friendly.
Your help and advice would be appreciated

What no replies??? Someone must have a view on whether on the pugs are good for this sort of thing??? I know they were good in their day but I have never been in one

Have you tried HIC for insurance? I'm with them with my weekend car (£15k of mods). They were only interested in the power output of the engine and even this goes in %increase bands!
Don't have the number to hand but they do have a web site somewhere (probably www.hic.co.uk)
