Make sure it's a genuine '91 big bumper car and not some dressed up small bumper one with a private plate. Check the fit of the bumpers, and that it has large front door windows with NO FRONT quarterlights. If this is the run out 8v model then it should have BBS cross spoke alloys and the half darkened rear light clusters of the 16v, but not the bee sting arial or little red 16v badges of the 16v car.
PAS, manual sun roof and c/locking I think were standard but if this car is as genuine and as well looked after as the price suggests then I think you will have a car that is a real hoot to drive, is totally credible in the pub stakes and will serve you well for another 100k miles.
(In case you hadn't figured this out I had a '90 8v for 3 years and 112k miles ten years ago and still regret selling it despite now having a Caterham and a Boxster).

i paid £1600 for pug 1.6 gti 1987 43,000 miles!!!
i lost double that in depreciation in 12 months on the wrx.
if the car is one lady owner, fsh , etc ,etc i would sy its worth it. you can easily spend £600ish just putting a cheaper car right.
swapping the scooby for the pug was the one of the best things i've done (its not winter yet though)

cheers, dapsteer,
those were along my thoughts, hopefully going to look at it and see if its description matches its condition, and then start bartering on the money front.....

must of :-
never had the oil or water checked
tyre shagged
full of dents
curbed wheels
knackered clutch
never been cleaned then!
wouldnt want to generalise but i would prefer to buy a "one lady owner ( one owner?)" than owned by 5 unknowns.
at the risk of upsetting the "ladies" they don't seem to drive the cars as hard!?
mine is absolutely brilliant (one lady owner)but you have to evaluate the car not just on the number of owners

A bit on the pricey side conmsidering I have seen them change hands for 50 quid (I own one), a Really nice one may be worth it, keep it well and you will get your money back as these cars have a following, dont style it either !

Just noticed, its a 5 door, worth about a grand based on that, they just arent as good, I had one and it leaked water and the shells get wobbly with age and mileage, for 2 grand you could get a mint 3 door one.

I know it's sold now a bit of info
What colour? (if it's white forget it) 8 or 16 valve? (16 valves tend be more desirable and therefore more expensive) How many doors? (A 5 door is only worth about £1000 if its an 8 valve). My fiancee recently bought a black 3 door 1990 big bumper GTI 16 valve for £1500 and it took weeks to find You can never find 3 door 16 valves that age with big bumpers and power steering for sale

I presume this was the black car on Autotrader. A friend had a white GTI which sold very early one morning almost immediately after the ad appeared but that was back in 97. Wonder which trader bought this one? I know that the guy who runs http://www.volkswizard.co.uk/ is always on the lookout for good GTIs. He's a bit expensive though. The blue one currently on his website that had 18k miles on was up for sale at 5k. There's another trader I know who buys up decent GTIs but he's expensive too and I wasn't that impressed when I took one of his cars for a drive. That was a real dog and he still wanted £1.7k IIRC.
