Question

Just been round Silverstone GP circuit with my mate in his 944 Turbo, and I was wondering what a good lap time is round there in a road car?

dunno as we wheren't allowed to use timing gear..

relatively speaking - faster than a boxster s and M3 coupe, slower than lawnmower powered westfields etc.

deffo slower than a radical

Depends who the organiser is, bookatrack will send the driver home if they see this happening.

Well I was at silverstone the other day and my mate just happened to look at the time on his watch when I went past. two and a half minutes later he just happened to glance at his watch again and by pure coincidence I went over the finish line at that very point

davyboy, I'd guess the S2000 and a 944 turbo are gonna be very roughly about the same (will vary a lot depending on driver) but on the lap my mate 'timed' (without my knowledge btw) it was early in the day and I wasn't pushing it so i'd guess somewhere in the 2 to 3 minutes zone. Do a search on the internet, may help.

The lap I had in the Caterham R400 driven by Phil Bennet was considerably faster than me in my Honda! That was one amazing experience, all the more so as he wasn't being gentle!

He managed a 2.26 - I thought that was pretty good.

Hmmm an interesting query.

I've scoured the web for laptimes around the GP circuit but could not find much. I found a video of a Lotus Elise at www.jimbocam.com that lapped in 2:50 but that was the only roadcar at a trackday I could find.

The F1 boys do it in around 1:20 but I did find some results from a Porsche Cup race back in 1999 where a stripped out 944 Turbo racecar won with a qualifying lap of 2:08 and a stripped out 996 racecar came second with 2:10

I was on track at Silverstone at Trax on Sunday

Apparently I did 3 laps at 2m55s each, so I may have been slow (no brakes) but at least I was consistent

that was in a UK MY00 Scoob with only a dawes device running at 16PSI held, and Sti Intercooler

Plus it was my first time ever on track too

That's a pretty good time then Sonic, nearly the same as the Elise and I do know the Jimbocam driver is a very experienced trackdayer.

Are you bitten by the trackday bug now?

The guy in the 944 was Andrew Sweetenham and is a member of our 944 mailing list.

The 944's Turbo's were banned after that for dareing to beat the new 996, lol

Dave

Cossie - The specs of your car must be fairly impresive to do that time!

Mr Polka

Yes definatly got the track bug now

Whilst on track I could have accelerated faster out of the corners, on the two long straights, but as my brakes were shot, I held back slightly so I could let the faster cars through on the straights, and to not overtake anyone, as I knew I would be knackered come the next corner, and then I would be holding other people up

I was happy with my time, more happy that 3 laps where consistent
