How is the Rovers inertia switch wired in? On my montego it was wired into the feed for the fuel pump, so when you crashed it cut the fuel pump and no more. If your is the same, cutting the fuel pump wont stop the engine turning over. If you get the engine turning over and it still won't start, check the inertia switch again as you may have tripped it instead of resetting it.
Immobiliser (more than likely)

Got a small problem with a Rover 214. Engine is 1.4 8v.
Can't start the bl**dy thing - even trying to bump start it doesn't get a peep out of it. Nothing wrong with the battery either. Any mechanics out there with an idea of the problem?
Cheers

Whoops - trying to be do too many things at once!!
More details? My mum parked it out the front of my place - few shrubs, couple of trees and a hedge [:P] - oh you mean about the engine...
Well - She switched it off - left it for a few hours, then came back and nothing. Looked at the starter motor contacts and they seem to be OK - cleaned them up anyway. Checked out the fuses - no problems there. Can turn the ignition on - motor just will not crank itself over - but battery is active and the radio starts so we think the immobiliser is behaving itself. Tried to bump start it in second, the engine was turning over, but only due to the movement of the wheels if you see what I mean. It seemed like there was no sparking or anything like that - just a dead engine.
I haven't got a multimeter to check if there's power getting to the motor or not - any idea's on how to check this out?
Thanks for the reply.

I had an old version 214, the starter motor went on that.
Try jump (not bump) starting. If that works, get a new battery.
If not, see if you can hear the solenoid firing for the starter motor.

Take a plug out and see what it's like. May be all fouled up with muck and fuel? Do you know that the fuel pump is working i.e. can you hear it clicking when you turn on or can you pull the line off to see if it is pushing fuel through? From experience if mum is in the driving seat when you try and bump start it make sure she has the ignition switch ON oh and good luck..... D

Stick your hand behind the radio from the drivers side. You should fine a fuel cut off switch, flick it and hopefully your problm is solved!
You don't need to remove the radio for this, you should have access from behind the centre console.

Could be a duff starter motor or a bad earth somewhere. Are the alternator wires ok? Are the battery connections ok? Have you tried a new battery. Have you got a mechanic to look at it?

Is it a fuel injected model, if so check that the engine cut off button has not popped out, happed to me on my M.G. Maestro once locate the button under the dash and push it back in.

Edited to say yes it's behind the radio as Scoobyvirgin has said, serves me right for not reading the whole post

mate had this on his rover 414.
the main feed from battery to starter motor (not the thinner one for the solenoid) had snapped at the starter motor and was flapping around. it appeared that the small movement the battery had had eventually sheared the cable at the starter end.
so check for a fat lead from the battery that should run to the starter. it may just be flapping about. DO NOT let it touch the bodywork as it is not fused and could cause you a major headache!!!

Could be anything. Difficult to say without looking at the car. If still no joy only a systematic check of all the usual suspects (mainly electrical) should reveal the problem. If your car has the solenoid on the starter motor with an exposed braided connection to the starter, this sometimes becomes damaged and then in time no longer provides a current supply to the starter. When this happens one moment it starts perfectly, the next nothing .....
Good luck ....let us know what it was when you've sorted it. That way we all learn.

If it won't bump start or turn over, it must be something like the immobiliser if there is one or a bad/broken earth somewhere or fusible link maybe.
Mind you, a mate had a very flat battery years ago on a nissan summatorother and that wouldn't bump or turn over, it had to be charged for quite a while first.

Cheers for the suggestions gents. Apparently the immobiliser was changed about 9 months ago after giving them some problems previously - I think I'll try that one first along with looking for the fuel cutoff switch All the connections from the battery to the starter motor look OK, so I don't think it's that.
Thanks for all your help. Will let you know how I get on after work.
Thanks

**Lunchtime update**
Went home for a quick fiddle - pressed in cut-off valve, don't think that was the problem. Tried to enter the demob code from the drivers door - sure I entered the correct code but the immobiliser wasn't having it, this could be a red herring though. Feeling like the solenoid might be the culprit - any advice?
Cheers
