Hopefully by the end of next week I should have a wodge of cash in my hand for the scoob. Need something cheaper to run.

Was looking at a Ford Focus for a cheap reliable run around. However the closer I get to losing the scoob the more I think I wont be happy driving something as slow as a Focus.

Been looking at Auto Trader and can get a GTI-6 for around £5k (dont want to spend much more). Not been a keen fan of french cars in the past due to friends who have loads of probs with their reliability. What is the 306 GTI-6 like in this respect - most have around 40k on the clock.

Also whats the fuel economy like? Insurance seems ok at about £500 a year.

Thanks,
Simon.

I believe the cam belts have to be changed every 36K- although the service schedule says more miles than that. I remember reading about a spate of cambelt failures.

Other than that it's the usual French problems with build quality. I considered one over my Impreza but came down on the side of the scoob.

Cambelt change is only every 60 or 72k if I remember correctly!!!
Although that said I would do earlier as mine nearly went at 53k
Heard it rubbing and got it changed!
Very good cars but fragile compared to a Scooby, engines are good though, need revving but apart from that ok.
Handling good too.
If you get one that needs brake work and you can get it cheap I have discs and pads front and rear brand new that I will sell for £100.

Rallye the one you want?.....providing driving thrills is all you after, Yes, but I have a Gti-6 as my main communiting car and wouldn't change it for a Rallye, besides being in the better colour (gold), the a/c and mod cons are great for traveling, epsecially with the weather a few weeks back. And the performance isn't that much different. Fantastic balanced handling gives joys aplenty down a good B road, with enough poke with the 6 gears when reved to move pretty quickly.

Taking it "very easy" (which is difficult because it likes to rev) means 40mpg crusing, so far better than scoobs, and my pulsar.

From all recent threads GTi6 is a cracking car to drive quick,
But is it a pussycat around town and on the school run??

Main car MG ZS180 which Mega on open roads, but not ideal for daily grind!

Any experiences out there?

If you want a good second car what about a 99 T Primera GT (half leather, AC autochanger etc etc) you can easily get one of them for 5 k and it will be more reliable than any 306 Gti.

Thumbs up

GTI-6 = cracking motor.

I had a phase 1 car, owned it for 2.5 years and only thing that went wrong was a wheel bearing. That was it.
And make sure you change the cambelt at half the recommended intervals

As for a town car - yep, its absolutely fine, and you can rev the knackers off it when you want a bit of fun!!!!

fragile compared to a Scooby
False impressions IMHO - the scooby is just as fragile a motor as well....
