Just got back from 2 weeks in the good ol' US of A and had a blast renting a new Ford Thunderbird. I've always been into American cars so I wanted something cool. 3.9 litre V8, 280hp, 5 speed auto box with sequential shifter thingy and amazingly it handled AND had really good ride. Made me laugh how Yanks kept saying things like "thats a real cute little sports car" when it was about the same length as a Mondeo estate

Made the Scooby look economical though, I reckon about 15mpg without thrashing it too much. A bit scary when you're in the middle of nowhere in Arizona and you can see the road for about 20 miles and there's no gas station and the fuel guage is plummeting

LOL @ "thats a real cute little sports car" !

So how much is it to hire summat like that? One day we will do a driving style holiday in the States and I'd rather do it in something "different".

Edit to ask:- So where did you go (other than Arizona)?

Budget rental were doing a deal, worked out at around $150 a day with all the insurance but mileage is limited to 150 miles per day, I was just pottering about in and around Las Vegas for a day or two so it was OK, but a bit pricey for longer term/serious driving. Also there is practically no storage space, the trunk would only hold the smaller of our 2 suitcases and nothing else, it's very shallow.

V5 - a couple of years ago, I was in Chicago and hired a Mustang for 3 days. I don't remember the price exactly, but seem to recall it being just over $300 with unlimited mileage. This was only about $15 per day more than a Mondeo sized saloon.

Try the websites of the big car rental places such as Hertz to get an idea of prices.

(Mustang - crude, pushrod engine, non-independent rear suspension, 18mpg - FUN. And chances to drive one over here are very limited).
