The 24v Cosworth conversion is definitely the daddy of v6 S series. It pays to have a look at the chassis rails as these can rust. The ball joints on the steering arms can go. Mine had just been replaced when I bought it - apparently they are off a saab 900. Also radiators can go - you don't want one that has been rad-welded as they run pretty warm in any case. The brakes are, how do you say, indifferent, but as long as youve got a strong thigh, you can stop. Check the seals of the hood for leaks. If the hood is old you may be as well to budget for replacing it. There are various things you can spray on to make it a little more waterproof.
You will find loads more info on pistonheads. It's a great looking and great sounding car,. Enjoy, if you go for it

I had a 390se for over two years. loved the smell of evostick, fibreglass, and leather. Leaked like a seive, 15 to the gallon (super U/L). But soon as you heard that modestly exausted v8 you could forgive it all. And the looks it got you would have thought i was driving it naked! Goahead and get one you won't regret it.
p.s. thers a crappy picture of mine in members gallery (your pic on my site, page 5 or 6 ithink.

Mac enjoy it........I had an S3 for a good few years and loved it.
Shame on you Paul for suggesting changing the engine. It should stay as standard. Besides the brakes etc would def not be man enough for the job.
Still not convinced about the 2.9 engine ...haha
If your interested Mac i have a good couple of years worth of TVR OC monthly mags at home gathering dust. Do you want them? You pay for the post and they are yours.

Right been thinking about the engine again coz its buggin me.
TVR didnt make an S1, it was called the S. It was built from E and early F reg i think. It had shorter doors the 2.8 engine from the granny etc.
Then came the S2 this was F and G reg. Pretty sure this was 2.9EFI engine giving an extra few horses.
Next was the S3 which I had. H and J platers, maybe late G as well. 2.9 EFI new dash longer doors etc.
Then we have the S3C which was the S3 but with driving lights leccy mirrors ( i think )J and early K plate.
Lastly came the S4 which was as the S3C but with the bonnet from the V8S.
Think that just about covers it, dates maybe slightly out but im pretty convinced the original S was 2.8 only not 2.9. Maybe you have an S2?
An of course there is the 3.9 litre V8S with 240BHP, a slighly wider chassis and smoother ride to cope with the extra grunt

There was a later S model which had the 2.9 engine and inevitably ended up being called the S1.5 by people in the TVRCC when I was a member. My cousin also owned a S1.5 so yes - they definately exist with the 2.9 engine.
I ran a S3 for a few years and loved it - biggest PITA is the exhaust which gets knocked loose on speed bumps and can ground easily if you're pressing on along bumpy roads - watch how high speed compressions.
Apart from that enjoy - I still have very fond memories of mine - anyone know the existence still of a dark blue S3 with saddle leather and reg TVR 7**K ?
Cheers

The first thing I did when i got my S3 was to get a large bore stainless pipe fitted. The silly rectangular silencers under the car were removed and I had one silencer fitted right at the back. She then had two upswept big bore pipes. It made it kinda different looking BUT it did stop me from having to buy a new exhaust every year or two, which seems pretty common due to grounding problems. It also gave it one hell of a howl and a lovely burble.
Mac mail me on Gary_kinghorn@stannah.co.uk and I will sort it out for you.

Just to confirm ....
The S1 had the 2.8 engine
The S2 had the 2.9 engine
But inbetween there was the S1.5, which was a mix of the S1 and the S2 - not just the engine, but the dash, wheels, etc ... basically whatever was luying around the factory.
As you've now got one I would SERIOUSLY recommend you purchase the "TVR S Bible" written by Steve Heath - it's worth every single penny and will be the most invaluable source of info - nothing has bettered it.

Kinky,
So if an S 1.5 is an S but with the 2.9 engine, S2 wheels, dash etc etc doesnt that make it an S2?
Been reading me TVR books last night and they dont mention the 1.5 although now you have said it I do remember something about it.
Anyway Mac I'm sending a load of my TVRCC mags to you today and the TVR book I have. It details your car etc. I'll never read it again so you may as well get some use out of it.
