Any opinions?
Looks like could be a cheapish, but quick replacement for my P1.
Anybody on here owned one before?
Strange question, i know, but are they fairly practical, ie can you get stuff in the boot, do the rear seats fold down?
Cheers,
Steve

Don't know how true this is... but a mate who spanners for the rally wrc teams warned me off them, when I was looking at buying a new car - I opted for the Scooby instead. I love Celicas - had a 91 GTi for 4 years, so was wanting to "upgrade" to the 94 shape GT4.
They're great cars... but he says, if the gearbox goes, you may as well throw away the car, as it is so dear to fix. Plus, they are considerably more expensive to buy in the first place, than a Scooby.
Duck.

Three of us went to Goodwood at the weekend in my friends GT4 (last shape i.e no pop-up lights). Boot space was a bit poor. His was a jap import and had a rear strut brace which meant f*** all went in. I think the seats do fold but the brace means big items won't go in.
Saying that we did manage to fit two three man tents, clothes, disposable BBQ's and enough beer and food to last a week (we only went for one night ) Although it did spill on to one of the rear seats.
Really great car on the whole. Didn't have the kick of a scooby although it was fast and felt very composed and grippy in the corners (he had 17 inch wheels).

The box for £500 comes with the diff too.
A brand new box will set you back about £1000.
Upgrade gear sets can be had for £400 - £1500 (the dearer being a six speed upgrade).
They are great cars and extremely reliable mechanically. Even if a gearbox is noisey (crunches are normal at high revs) they will keep on going.
There is a rear tower brace which does limit the boot a little but the seats fold down and the parcel tray comes out.
Not as quick as a Scoob but the turbo is a little more refined. Being twin entry there isn't the same kick in the pants but you can make the same cross country times and still get low 30's for mpg.

...& a brand new box is £1K from Toyota, so not that bad. -doh dos beat me to it!
Had my 205 WRC for about 18 months now & had a standard 205 for 3 years previous ...yes the seats fold & yes theres a strutbrace that stops you getting a big box in ...but more than enough room for 3 snowboards & 2 hold alls
Different beast to a P1, its heavier but a bit more refined & better built (still doesnt rattle! & its 9 years old!) ...weak point on a 205 is front suspension- make sure it doesnt clunk or squeek otherwise its £600-£700 a corner!

Mate just had his srvied and it cost him £2.5K. His jap import sounded like it had never been maintained .
Thats said it looks nice.
One of the chaps who works with me has one and and so does and ex owrk colleague. Must admit they look nice but even with 300bhp they struggle to keep up with my fairly standard Scoob even in a stright line.
Still quick car though and good value when you consider the build quality.

how much is a replacement gearbox for a scooby from scoobaru?? just out of curiosity? The GT4 has same engine as mr2 turbo, and the year after the carloz sainz edition is best to get! mate has one, and it is certainly rapid, and not as slow as you'd imagine!

Got to agree with most of the above comments.
The GT4 was one of the cars I considered before I bought my Fiat Coupe 20VT, very progressive turbo response / acceleration, felt very solid and had excellent handling, reminded me of the Audi S2.

Mmmm - I like that black one.
Makes it all the more annoying when you consider that the new Celicas are so comparitively (sp?) slow.
During the 90s, Celicas and Supras were a force to be reckoned with, and towards the end of that decade, pics of the new Celica looked promising. Then Toyota stick a weedy 1.8 engine in, scrap the Supra and seemingly turn their back on seriously fast coupes.
Bah! It's about time they brought out a GT4 version of the current model. I have read (Auto Express) that a Supra replacement is on the cards though... I think Toyota are waiting for some success at F1 before launching the model.

The new Supra is out in 2004. Will be about £30,000 to compete with the 350Z. They are dropping the turbo too. Looks a bit Aston Martin.
They won't bring out a current model 4wd in the Celica range as they are no longer in the WRC with it. They were dropped for cheating (amazing expanding restrictor on the turbos in the mid 90's).
There is no longer a need for homologation so the Corrola never came out in 4wd on mass either.

Would like to buy it... except I'm still coughing up on the loan for the Scooby... and a house... and any spare cash gets converted to beer tokens.

Sorry mate - I'm content with my DGM at the moment. I considered a GT4 when I was looking to replace my 91 Celica. Looked at VR4s, Evo 4s, and even RS2s... but opted for the Scooby in the end.
Provided I don't crash it, or it gets nicked, I'll probably keep it for a couple more years.

I miss the old Celica sometimes. Was only the GTi version, but was bright red, with those posey pop-up headlights.
Miss the brakes too - the ones on my Scooby are standard 2 pot jobs, and don't inspire confidence when trying to slow down.
I'm sure that Autocar or similar said that until the new Porsches appeared with their special systems, the brakes on the post 94 GT4s were the best they'd ever seen. I think it was discovered on the 0-100-0 challenge.

Standard fitment brakes on the ST205 models are 330mm up front with four pots and 315mm at the back with two pot.
It'll stop a lot quicker than you think. Always pull up short at the lights.

I had an Sti Ra V-Ltd, lovely car and now that I think about it despite the numerous amounts of Roy Bacers cruisin about town Id have it back in a second. I got a GT-4 St185 Jap Widebody in black, it came with JIC coilovers and adjustable Top Mounts, Quickshift, Blitz BB, HKS DV, and 17s. Like most people have said before they are heavy and the Torque isnt as great.
But since Owning my Celica I have starting getting the craic with a bloke who has the Carlos Sainz version, he has very similar mods except he also has water injection. After being out in it, I am now buying an Aquamist System, his Torque was definately the same as my old STi RA and it was fast. Ok so I dont have Dyno figures but I owned my scoob long enough to understand its capabilites. But I didnt really mess with it much and now in hindsight I wish I had. The thing that keeps anoying me is, my Ra had a 5th injector which according to ..... erm cant remember now but someone on here checked to see if disconecting the 5th injector made any difference which it didnt. So that would of been the most logical place for the water injection to go in, no tapping etc.
Anyway im gonna get a front mounted intercooler and water injection and complete the exhaust as theres only a de-cat and back box on at the momment. Im going for some safety first before turning up the boost.
Another thing I found about this car which was similar to the Scoob was the bad positioning of the intercooler, the Celica is even worse as it is very close to the Turbo, so surely having an intercooler positioned across the Head/top of the engine is dead stupid. * Car maufacturers take note *
The coilovers are tough but I love it, is like having the wheels as an extension of you body, as a sixth sense, you really do feel every detail in the road. So detailed that sometimes its best kept for certain journeys and a 2nd car for the lunar-roaming that is town driving
Got a shot in a R32 recently, now that was something else, it absolutly rocked and was waay faster than the scoob, mind you it was being driven agressivly. The thing I found with it bar the brute power was the delivery, the engine felt like is was producing the power in a very effortless manner, it didnt sound or feel strained, and the handling was crazy I hadnt experienced anything like it. Very controlled.
I will definatley be gettign one of these as the prices are getting more reasonable now, and I love the, it looks like a japanese taxi ! But goes like a Taxman being chased by a pikey's pitbull !!
Aye so, I would recommend either Celica St185 or St205, there is plenty of potential, they look good are reasonably priced and have Japanese reliability.
