This may have been done several times before buy my search facility ain't working

I have heard these great little motors have questionable engine reliability once the mileage hits 70-80k plus. Can anyone either confirm or deny this?

I need a fun run-about that can swallow some luggage, doesn't cost too much to run and can provide plenty of grins when required

Is this a good option??

No worse than any other car.

I had mine for 2.5k years and other than wear and tear stuff it needed a new wheel bearing.

Just make sure its serviced properly/regularly.

As for is it a good option - hell yes!!!! Its a cracking car to drive - last of the good looking Pugs, and was king of the hot hatch league for quite some time as voted by various different mags!

Got a 306 Rallye myself and they are superb cars!

But, I am actually selling it http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=222902 if you're interested???

Rated as the best hot hatch ever by several mags, they're 5* rated by Evo and CCC raced one against a CTR round a track and it lapped quicker, so they really are superb!

Reliability is no worse than any other car and provided they are serviced as they should be then there's no problem.

Only thing I'd recommend is changing the cam belt early, as there have been some cars that have let go early, due to the tensioner failing, so swap the belt & tensioner (did mine strtaight away) and they're fine.

You won't be dissapointed!

The most important thing is to change the cambelt and tensioners way in advance of Peugeots recommended intervals.
I think they say about 70k miles, but quite a few have gone before they've done 50k miles (leading to big bills), so when I picked up my Rallye at 45k miles it was the first thing I had done.
Check out www.306GTi6.com - I found out loads on there.

To be honest any hot hatch is going to be a little tired by 80k+ miles if driven in the manner God intended, stating the obvious but VAG stuff lasts better than most.

So aside from making sure the cam belt and tensioner are sorted then we have a sweet motor? I had an R reg XSi which was a great little car - was wondering if the GTi's were more fragile?

Mmm, do I sell the Scoob or not? My head says yes... my heart on the other hand

Rich - I need A/C for my daughter as we do long drives and it's a bit much for her without it. Also if I sell the Scoob it is to save some wonga so would be looking to spend circa 5k...

Thanks all - still 100% undecided!

As said, as reliable as any other car if maintained properly (and agree with the cambelts )
Also check the clutches out, these can be prone to dying, and head gaskets can go (like any other car).
Depending on which MY your looking at.... post 98 afaik didnt have any recalls, the 96/97 models did though, one was for fuel lines (re routing of) but i cant remember the others (nothing too serious though)

I had a '97 306 gti-6. Great car to drive. Exhaust needed middle and back sections around 57k. Cam belt went, at 55k, cost £1700 to fix! So I'd advise getting that changed again if you buy one at 70-80k.

Apart from that usual stuff, pads/disks at 40ish.

I traded it in for a MY01 WRX. Sometimes regret that as well :-)

A friend of mine had one - the cam belt went at 56k.

I had a Xsara VTS (same engine) - it was reliable. I think the key is getting the cambelt changed at 45-50k (rather than the 60k recommended).

Mine went at 32k miles Less than 24 hours after buying the car from Peugeot - so covered under warranty too, hence I didn't include it as it didn't cost me. First one they were aware of going in this country so was off the road a good few weeks as they had to wait on the parts from France. They obviously hadn't expected to need them so soon thus there were none in the country

Whats the highest mileage any of you seen on a 306 Gti-6?

I'm looking at selling mine becuase I could be doing over 500 miles a week to work once I move and its already on 73k (99T).

There are some I know of at 90k+ miles, still going strong, so there's not a problem...

Just the cambelt change!

No, they were 17" replicas of the standard wheels, I tried to link the pic full size from Fotopic but all I seem to get is thumbnail size!
