Any Porsche 911(993) owners
#1
Hi all,
Well I was planning on buying a boxster 2.7 or S in the early part of next year(you have to plan ahead right)
Anyway, a mate of mine is trying to convince me that for the same money I should buy a real porsche namely a 993, probably not a cab but maybe.
Ive seen reasonable looking examples for about 28k with approx 50,000 miles on the clock.
The thing is Im concerned about running costs. So can anyone tell me what they are likely to be including servicing intervals?? Im guessing depreciation wont be too bad, and insurance, well Im prepared for it but shouldnt be too much worse than Scooby??
Anyway any thoughts, or Boxster owners thoughts would be really helpfull
thanks
Andy

ADP - I went through the same dilemma....
A 933 is slower depreciating - but there isn't any comparison with regards to servicing costs - the boxster is cheaper.
email me if you want more details.

I went through the same dilemma as well and was basically convinced to go the Boxster route by the fact that my neighbour went for an absolutely mint 993 and it still cost him an arm and a leg even with nothing going wrong. The 993 you get will be 50k miles older than the same cost Boxster so all the expensive bits are bound to start - shocks, exhaust, discs etc.
I've done 30k in my Boxster with 1 x 12k service and 1 x 24k adding upto about £800 plus a few tyres and thats it. 30k on top of a 50k 911 would have been a huge amount more.
Also, unless you are Walter Rohl you will travel accross ground quicker in a Boxster. It is sublime to drive. While the 911 is much faster in the right hands, if you plan to use the car every day, then that journey home late on a sleeting Friday night in February will be a lot more painful in a twitchy 911 on less than new tyres.....
My advice is if you want weekend thrill go for a 911. If its an everyday car, Boxster.

I went for a new 2.7 - it is much better than the 2.5 and when I bought 2 years ago, the used 2.7's were the same price as a new one as they had only been out a short time. If you can stretch to it, get the latest shape 2.7 as it'll hold its value the best.
I've driven the latest S and couldn't justify all that extra wonga for not a huge amount of increased performance for day to day driving. As ever, drive everything you can and see what you like.

Im holding out for a 2.7, I could fairly easily afford a 2.5 NOW, but have decided to hold out, save a little and go for a 2.7 in the spring of next year.
have you had any issues with people being nasty towards you in it?? have heard a few stories about people getting bad reactions from other road users

Went for a 3.2S.... had a 2.5 with tiptronic - not a pleasant combination....
Went for the 3.2 'cos I wanted something more removed from the 2.5 I had had previously.

I've had very, very few nasty comments. However, pull up next to one of those horrific white strechted pimp tinted limos on a Sat night though, and the crowd of p155ed girls on their hen do in the back will certainly give you some interesting observations on what they think of you, your bits and what you may encounter if they had their way etc etc, but then again I do live in Essex....
