Autocar article
"The Peugeot became an IT car. Like the Impreza circa 96-97, there was a buzz about it, a frisson of excitement you could feel. It was a car you simply had to own"

My mate had one about 10 years ago. I loved the steering it felt so communicative.
It lasted a month before getting smashed into a wall.
'What happened?' I asked
'Well, I was going round this corner and I realised I had entered it a bit too fast so I lifted off'
D'oh
the lift off oversteer

I have to say, throttle response is superb, my one now has PAS where my first didn't, and I really think it makes the car much better (although some say its not purist enough). However, its the best PAS I've used, its not over assisted at all, fairly heavy really but has a superb quick rack on it

It's a shame it's French not to mention the iffy build quality.
However since the cars are so damn good, I had the 1.6+1.9 models, who gives a to55. These cars are about having fun and are about the best cars I ever owned.

Well, the cars did rattle and so on, but they never let me or my ex Wife down. I wanted to keep the last one we had, as it had been sooo reliable and didn't really have too many rattly bits.
A late model's on my shopping list, when I've got the dosh.
Cheers

Found my 1.9 Sorrento in Feb/March through SN and Matt J. Its needed a few things but its 13 years old so hey , however on the whole its pretty damn mint (Only on 72k miles(valve stem oil seal failure time! and boy they need doing!!! ) ) TBH I could have got away with doing a lot less to it, but I'd rather spend the cash and sort as much as poss.
They always been one of my fav cars of all time, when the supe arrives she'll become a weekend car and garaged and hopefully put back to showroom condition

Also best car I ever had. My current one has lowered suspension, bigger brakes and extra power and torque. With wide sticky tyres even the oversteer is (almost) tamed but this is what makes it so agile.
Just bought a Scooby and will have to sell it, unless I can get in into store in the loft without the wife noticing!

I love 205's also and have had the same problem as to a replacement, however its my MK2 GTI that causes the problem, I honestly couldnt pick between the Golf and the 205 GTI, both great cars for different reasons, its a bit like the Commodore 64 versus Spectrum arguments at school, I avoided this by saving up from my paper rounds and having both which is my plan, get a 205 GTI as well !
I even like the old 309's, had a 309 'look' bought as salvage for 100 quid and put 15,000 miles on it, the build quality is a little bit iffy on items like trim but they are basically strong cars that dont rust, I am repairing a crash damaged 92' 205 for a freind and its mint underneath the crud and green mouldy bumpers.
To be honest I dont think there is much in my budget (6 grand) that offers so much as these old bangers without having to resort to stuff that will bankrupt me, both can be repaired from Euro Car parts for buttons, Pug wing 11 quid, Golf Bumper 19 quid.

Yep, the best car I've ever owned, by far. Had 2, since then I ve had integrales, Mercs, Clio Cup, driven a 22b, you name it - none though stack up in terms of sheer fun and involvement.
They were even comfortable on mega-mileage journeys!

that first comment about stacking a 205 prompted me to remember this - where i was working last year there was a guy who had a 205 1.1 barryed up to look like .. **** (I got in trouble with him because i commented on the stupid spoiler he put on the back 'that looks like polysterene *poke spoiler - oops as large chunk comes off in hand!*' He managed to stack his. His story was 'it wasnt my fault, i was going round a corner too fast and hit a wall'. Funnily enough he couldnt explain just how that made it not his fault....

Hey nice one
Out to buy the mag tomorrow
Still loving my 205 Mi16 and whilst the lack of PAS is fine for me my wife does struggle with it if she takes the pug out.
Finding I don't have time for the track days yet ... and would 'almost' be tempted to swap my Mi16 for a 1.9 with PAS (for my much better half).
I'd miss the screaming Mi16 engine though.. and those wheel spins in 3rd and 4th!

Hey mate
Glad you like the Mi16, can you not retro fit the 1.6/1.9 PAS rack? I've heard its not that difficult - would it fit with the Mi16 conversion?
The 1.9 isn't bad at all though - I had great pleasure today in showing a Mini Cooper S he was no faster up the dual carriageway than a 13 year old 130bhp 205 LOL! While I didn't gain, I didn't lose any ground either - thought it would pull away to be honest!

I had a 1.6GTi and it was superb........drove a few 1.9s too and more fun as they are just that bit quicker!!
Im on a saxo Vts now and i have to say that on a fun per pound level its very much up there....
Same style of handling, same power delivery and same lift off!!!!
If you cant afford a scoob then for 6 grand you will get a very good one! (and they go for a lot less too).
Not quite the same pedigree as the 205 but i think they remain underrated. Driven well they embarrass a lot of more exotic machinery.
Yes a lot of boy racers own them......but then the 205 was a boy racer car too....its the fact they go so well that makes them so!
Cars to be thrashed and enjoyed.........cant beat them.

ScoobyJawa - not sure about putting PAS onto the Mi16 conversion but I'm sure it's possible.
Btw - do you have the standard exhaust on your 1.9? How noisy is the car in general?
The Mi16 is LOUD (standard exhaust) - as there's sooo much breathing from the manifold to the downpipe (almost sounds like it's blowing but it's not). I like my cars quiet and 'might' think about sacrificing the Mi16 performance for something more standard.
Richard.

I don't think many are what you'd call quiet mate due to not much soundproofing to keep the weight down LOL! I bought mine and it was standard exhaust wise and it was fine, a bit throaty but thats the nature of the beast I guess, to me it was quiet (well, it would be after 2 years with a ScoobySport ). I now run a Magnex BB on it which can be quite boomy at 3-4k revs, but sounds great.
Have you checked the exhaust to see if there are any holes? My downpipe/centre (the combined one eg 2 piece exhaust) had a hole which I filled and that really effected noise levels.

As for the PAS - I asked on the Sport Club forums I think about retro fitting PAS to a 1.9 if I bought one without and it was a case of sourcing the parts, poss from a scrappy, and a little trickery and jiggering about to fit but essentially not all that hard.
As I said - not too sure how that goes with the Mi16 I can't imagine it being an issue as the engine isn't bigger, just a few more ancillaries......

Rattles and road noise are fine - and below 4k revs it's not bad - just when you open it up (which is understandly loud).
No holes - had the downpipe replaced prior to the conversion - just a loud little car.
Amazing how much attention the 205 gets - I have more people looking at it than the Scooby. Such a great shape.

A true classic. I had a 1.9 as my first car....... had it for 5 years and it never let me down once. It started to like a bit of oil near the end....don't they all. Those valve stem seals!!
A good one still looks fab! They look better than most new hot hatches.

Agree with SJ: most 205's are noisy. Only solution is to visit your local car trimmers, purchase some top quality sound deadning & retro fit it around the bulkhead/floor area.
Still love mine after almost 2 years, an eternity for me in car ownership. What the hell do you replace it with?
My car is coming off the road shortly for new engine mounts and front wishbones, just to tighten the front end up a bit, and to attend to a little scab on the sill. Will do it myself and enjoy it. Cost no more than £200. So it will be back to the Bugeye for a few weeks sadly

LOL @ Olly re bugeye!
Funny the attention it gets was mentioned, in the first few months of ownership of my Pug I had more comments about it than in 2 years of scoob ownership
