Question

My quatttro is going to be off the road for a while so i'm looking for a bargain basement car. Been offered a G reg Skoda Rapid with a years MOT for £200. Always fancied one of these(sorry).

Its either that that or something boring and cheap to run for similar money ie sierra, golf, etc. insurance isn't a problem but it must be DIY friendly and cheap to fix and idealy capable of the odd motorway jaunt. I've ran cheap cars before so I know what I'm letting myself in for...

Anyone got any ideas/opinions?

I just bought a BMW 320I se 4 door for 250 quid....it is a bit tatty but with 1 years MOT is a steal.

Got electric windows and alloys, plus the guy before put on x drilled brakes :-)

Go the german route mate as even with 142k the BM still pulls strongly....or maybe look at a Sierra....as they are bullet proof.

Cheers Matt

No ideas but have an opinion.

If this is the Skoda with the sloping back, then for £200 I'd say go for it. If you get bored, then start modding it and give some drivers a shock.

I think there's an off-the-shelf kit to for the FIAT twin-cam and it's derivaties into the Rapid, can't remember where from, though.

Got a 120 estelle for the missis when she was between cars. Cost £50 had 6mnths mot! I loved the little thing, esp in the snow when it handled like a 911 in the dry had an odd starting problem tho so used to try & park it on hills

Never washed it, never locked it & the ignition barrel was shagged so used to start it with a screwdriver. Ok it was painfully slow but would hold 80 mph on a long enough run up & overall a right giggle.

oh yeah & RON is right the wheels do have a tendency to fall off had to tighen the wheelnuts weekly.

another vote for the Rapide here. I remember reading Autocar articles about how it handled so much like a 911. =)

And when you are done with it, you can strip the running gear and build a Porsche 550 Spyder replica!

Cool

Been there, done that... DO IT!

I had a nice grey one called "Yoda the Skoda"

Came with minilite style alloys, and a group N exhaust system. It revved like buggery and surprised a lot of people. Handling was great, and the steering responses were amazing...

I've been on the look out for another one for ages without much luck.

I think a turbo scoob motor heart-transplant would be fantastic!!
