Piston aero engines are dry sump due to them needing to operate at different angles even upside down, as stated seperate oil resovoir acts as the 'sump' system is sealed so oil is continually supplied to the moving parts under pressure at any angle or under different G forces.

In a car it also helps you to sit the engine down lower into the car as you don't have a deep sump pan to contend with - best centre of gravity. Our XTR2 is dry sumped as the hayabusa engines don't like being put into cars and hooned round tracks subjected to high lateral G's in corneres. Other bike engines (Fireblade etc.) don't seem to suffer in the same way for some reason.
I don't think anyone 'normal' road scoobies on here have been dry sumped - or even winged for that matter.
