Looking for a hack as a second car to scoob still... fancy something that's still nippy and I can throw around for a laugh.
Roevr is dirt cheap but has that fabbo variable valve timing engine, Puma is ok, maybe a bit girly. anyone driven either or other suggestions, trying to keep insurance group to 14 or maybe 15 at a push..
cheers

Cheers Paul, a Puma has just arrived at the local ford garage, they want £6999(I think), it's got 41k miles and aircon.. looks ok to me, however the back bumper has been sprayed, and looked to me that their was some silver paint on one of the rear springs so I'm sure it's been thumped - not sure how hard until I get a closer look. I'm going to turn up in my old saab and see what they'll offer.. if I can't get it for £5k plus my scabby saab, I'll just walk away and find a better one..

Go for the Puma.I had one for around a year, and they are a great laugh, not a lot of room in the back though.
The back bumper was resprayed on mine before I picked it up,as it was scratched, quite common so I was told,as the boot is quite high.
Good Luck

Tough one that...
If you're okay with the image thing then the Puma 1.7 isn't a bad option... they're quite nippy and the chassis is pretty good... have to remember though that they are really a last generation Fiesta with a different body... hence they're pretty small and the interior is very plasticky and cheap feeling.. Group 12 insurance is quite steep too for a car that's only really a "warm-hatch" (0-60 comes up in a little under 9 secs)
The Rover 218VVC (I assume you mean the Coupe version) I would say is a much better machine... Okay looks-wise its more dated and its not as trendy either... but you will only pay around £4.5-£6k for one (most of the depreciation has happened already) and you do get 145bhp and a good chassis (they don't shred the tyres quite as badly as the older 2.0 turbo version !!)... 0-60 is in the mid to late 7s and they're good for nearly 130 flat out.
Targa top is a novelty and the interior is from the bubble-shaped Rover 200 hatch... its a lot better than many people think too..
Insurance is group 15 which is fairly typical for this class of car...
Best thing to do is drive 'em both and see what you like best...both good, but I know which I'd go for....
Hope this helps...

...and if you don't mean the 218VVC coupe but the 200Vi/ 25 with the same engine - I would recommend one of those provided its been well looked after.
They really are cheap and the parents still love theirs as a very quick, economical and surprisingly(?) very reliable stealthy car.
I enjoy driving it even after more exotic kit.

Another vote for the Puma!
I drove one for a couple of weeks a while back and was very impressed, very tidy in the handling department and enough power for it to be fun (providing it`s the 1.7).
There are loads about too so look for a straight one.

Thanks peeps, I have had rover coupe before (220 Turbo) so I know what they are like. Just been down the ford garage to have another look at the puma, and lo and behold they have just got in a 1 year old Focus ST170 with 7k miles for £13k - looks pretty tasty, only problem every man and his dog has a focus...

I would go for the Puma over the Rover but I would go for the Focus ST170 over the Puma... It just depends if you can justify laying out that sort of money on a daily hack or not.

Having owned both - Puma every time.
Rover 200vi may be quick but that's all & it's still a Rover & u'll lose a fortune on it - awfull interior too - couldn't wait to get rid of it.
Puma's fun - infinately better handling.

£13K for a 1 year old ST170 with 7k miles is way too expensive mate.
They're, what, £15995 new. And only £14,695 online direct from ford.
Take the VAT off that and you're looking at a drop to £13,600 at 1 day old on list or £12,500 on the internet deal.
No way would I be paying £13k for a 1 year old car.

Racing Puma !?!
Naaaaaaahhh !! Rip off insurance (same group as a Classic Scooby !!!), rip-off asking price and hardly startling performance when you consider what you pay...
no wonder it didn't last five minutes...
The ST170 Focus is another also-ran machine... over-priced and not a great deal of a performance hike over the standard 2.0 Zetec model. For the money and insurance you could do do alot better...
People keep on mentioning depreciation of Rovers... surely it doesn't really apply here... Even the newest 200Vi or Rover Coupe VVC is going to be 4 years old... they can be snapped up for £3-£5k no probs - okay in a few years it may only be worth £2.5k or so, but tell me of any other motor out there in this price bracket that wouldn't lose nearly as much...
The interior is slightly dated by today's standards but the Puma interior is really poo... seats aren't very hard-wearing and the plastics are horrid... (all IMHO !!!).
I've pi55ed all over plenty of Pumas on the B-roads over the years too...
Like I said... drive 'em and see what suits you...

My Uncle has the Rover BRM which is a VVi with a Red Leather interior, silver bits on the body which is British Racing Green and Orange er "Lips" at the front (can be resprayed of course), seems really pleased with it, it has an LSD, different gearing, lower suspension and bigger wheels than a normal one.
H eraced a 225 TT the other day and stayed with it, bearing in mind he is 57, quite quite mad and has several cars plus a one owner 1990 GSXR 1100 I am inclined to believe him, its had a couple of minor mods as well.

Exactly my thoughts with the Puma, it's very very gay, may handle very nicely but nope not for me now when I think about it..
Saab 9-5 2.3 Turbo, leather, aircon, millions of goodies all for same price as a Puma.... hmmmm... possible....

Wanst on about the Gay thing, whether straight or Gay, men shouldnt buy Pumas, and if they must drive their wife's then they should prominetly display a "Wife's Car" sticker in the rear window.

I just need to tint the windows and pretend I'm a drug dealer LOL
Only 185Bhp - off to abbots for some mods..
