It depends, if an m5 engine drops straight into an m3 shell then I'd go for that but if there's a lot of work i.e. engine/gearbox mounts, wiring loom etc then I'd leave the m3 engine in and "play" with that, running 8psi on a big engine wouldnt be that much, using low compression pistons would ensure this but there seem to be a few people/companies that are doing these conversion, its worth a look around

Raks - i wouldnt bother, whats the point of all that effort just for an extra 19bhp, and i'd imagine it would cost ££££££s
Why not just tune it thew M3:
Gruppe M induction kit £800 gets 15bhp
Bexley unichip remapping gets 17bhp £500
Supersprint decat and exaust worth around 15bhp - 1K
Get this lot and you will have a seriously fast M3 (good enough to take on a 360 etc) and save a bundle over an engine transplant!

wow, didnt realise how flexible the M3 is!
could buy a baseline M3 then (coupe) for about £12-13k and then throw in a couple of k for tuning, and it would a nice luxurious rocket.
Hmmmmmm.......
hey, could the M suspension cope? Or would it need a revamp also?

Would the de-cat render the MOT invalid? What about a sports cat. Is there one available for the 3 series? Same amount of power upgrade?
Also, would the car benefit from the 'other' types of upgrades? Bigger injectors, lightened flywheel/clutch, lighter pistons/crankshafts/cams, ported heads?
Really thinking about an upgraded M3 as a daily drive. Think it would be undriveable as a daily?

yes it will fail MOT without cat (meow) but MOT it first then it will be good for a year. you can put i back on next MOT. i've de-cated my J91 E36 325 and that will be okay cos dont need a CAT until 08/1993 k reg. sounds great too just a little louder and deeper. (scorpion bypass pipe)

I would rather not have the problem of switching pipes for the MOT, be it only once a year. Sports cats not possible?
Round where I am, the cops are very cautious with drivers as it is, so I don't want to be pulled to then be questioned about the exhaust etc.
Ive been in the car when they have done this, not only is it a pain to go to the station later on in the week with documentation, but it takes 2hrs out of the day!!!
