Buying a £4k ish Estate...
#1
I need something practical to scratch around in. Priorities:
1. Reliability
2. Lack of depreciation and easy to resell
3. Currentish respectable image
4. Performance
Considering either a 97/98 Passat or an ex-Plod Omega MV6 (going rate about £2.5k). Any feedback or other suggestions?
Cheers
Lee.

Had a passat 1.8 once when someone crashed one of the pool cars...
Well built and smooth with possibly the worst steering I've ever used - no feel whatsoever Wasn't very quick either!
I'd go for an ex plod omega - for £2.5k its worth a punt!

Try looking at Skoda Octavias, Audi/VW with a different badge. I sold my STI 3 a few months ago & bought a Skud 4x4.
With a few mods it will be as quick if not quicker than the Scoob & the build quality is 100 times better, the running costs are way less, even mods are cheaper, the car is based on a Golf (like the Audi TT) so a lot of the tuning bits for these fit.
Also its not a Police/**** in Nova Magnet.
Older Octavias are really cheap & if you really want to save money on day to day costs look for a 1.9 diesel. they do 2 versions, a 90 bhp & a 110 bhp. I cant vouch for performance figures for the older Diesels but we recently bought a new 110 bhp diesel estate for my Wifes work car. Over the first 6000 miles it has averaged 41.6 mpg & it gets well used, I have seen just over 120 on the speedo.

Paid £5500 for my 1996 E34 BMW 540 Touring last year, but you can pick them up for £4k or so.
4.0 V8 with 286 bhp, 295 lb/ft. Mine has 125k on it with no problems.
155 limited top, and sub 7 second to 60.
Defo one of the fastest practical estates you can buy, and good fun with it.
