Question

Change in situation is on the horizon (circa Sept).. So may need to change motors.

Ideally would like to stay Jap or go to German. Would need to be able to take longish (London-Bath) Motorway drives, be "fun" and bulletproof... 30+ mpg would be nice too!!!

Initial thoughts:

Almera GTI
Golf GTI (Mk2/3 16v)
Civic Vti

Any others to consider? Any comments on the initial thoughts?

PH Sportscars in Derby are advertising a stolen recovered 944 Turbo for £3k. Only needs a front bumper.

Mk1 MR2 would meet all your requirements with a bit of cash to spare. Depends if you need 4 seats though.
I had one for 7 years and loved it. Great to drive and cheap to run.

MK2 GTI 16V - nice and quick, reliable and built to last. If you look hard enough you should be able to get a nice one with a full VAG history. My old one did an average of 43MPG on a motorway run@80MPH.

Mk2 Golf's are great, but good one's are getting rare. I presonally don't rate the Mk3.

Almeras have a fantastic chassis.

Civics have fantastic engines.

All round, as long as you don't have an image problem, I'd go for the Almera as it makes a cracking value 2nd hand buy.

Hmmm, if you still want jap, go for the MX-5! :bouce:

Nice little motor, and shouldn't do you too badly on the juice. Examples can be had for roughly that price, and it also leaves room in the future to be tuned/modded.

Oh, and you always get that little sideways action in them

Cool

You wil get a mint Astra GTE 16v for under 2k. 156bhp, 135mph max,
0-100 in 19.7 seconds and will do an easy 35mpg cruising on motorway. Nice and torquey unlike the Golf 16v mk2 so no need to knock it down a gear all the time on motorway inclines to get decent acceleration. Excellent brakes as well.

Hi all,

Some interesting suggestions. Hadn't considered a MR2, not sure I'd fit in a MK1 (at 6ft 6 it could be a bit cramped!).

STI4 - Thanks for the offer, but I'll be looking at changing in September.. Think your motor will be long gone by then!

Must admit that the Almera is favourite at the moment. Reasons being they are still quite new, and I would assume that being a Nissan quite reliable. I know the image is poor, but never been image driven!

Any other candidates? Any decent diesels in that price range, can you call a diesel fun though!!??

i know of a perfect Nissan candidate.............a skyline r32 gts single turbo-gtst, or single turbo and 4WD-gts4, but just above your price at 4k but hey its a blody skyline for gods sake(you should be willing to sell your soul for a skyline) its reliable and cheap to run compared to its big bro the GTR and most of all it will smoke most of the cars stated above or you can go for the non turbo, in your price rage but not as much fun, but hey its still a skyline

P.S give me a shout if you need to find one
