Question

OK. I'm considering buying a UK MR2 GT for about £2500. I notice a few poeple on here have MR's and just wondered what miles their vehicles have covered.

I'd be looking at about 80-100k :O Which is apparently not a problem if there is a FSH and cam belt change at 60k.

Anyone want to shed some light on high mileage MR2's ?

Just sold my MK2 GTi with 103k miles on it. In the past 14k miles it has been so reliable it was untrue. Never missed a beat, and used no oil, even though I drove it hard.

On the last service, the oil was still clean, and there was more than 3/4 of it left on the dipstick, thats over 9000 miles.

It still drove as new when I sold it - they are bullet proof engines. Just remember to keep them serviced, do the cambelt, and use Toyota ForLife coolant for the colling system and they will go on forever.

So good in fact, I am buying another in 12 months time.

The guy that bought my 2 said his missus didnt want one as she was worried about luggage space (there is more than you think actually).

She seemed to be smiling when he booted it up the road though on collection (with a cold engine ).

MR2s go for 200k plus if looked after - you're worries are much more likely to be other than the engine. On a Mk2, rust is almost non existent, even on 13 year old cars. If you see any, walk away. A new clutch is an expensive job, so check that it's still strong. Check that the brake calipers aren't sticking - another common problem. Brakes and suspension are expensive, so check that these are in good conditon too.

Other than that, pretty much bullet proof. But for £2,500 you'll probably be looking at a pink (the red paint fades if left in the sun) Mk2.

Got an '87 mk1 133000 miles, '92 mk2 98000 miles, both absolutely faultless engines are very tough, the '87 car hasn't been well looked after by the previous owners, no history after 27000miles i changed the oil on it when i got it and it was so thick and full of crap it took over an hour to drain, changed oil and filter, it doesn't use a drop, doesn't burn any runs silently.

a more scoobynet type MR2 owner club
